Hoping someone sees this in time. Ds is scheduled for surgery at 1pm today. Should he have IV abx during the procedure? He is already taking Augmentin. Thanks!

Thanks, Kiera! No, you are not too late. Surgery is on Wednesday at 1:00 (technically "today" since it is after midnight here.) :) Out of curiosity, why do our kids need the extra abx?

It's just best to give a dose intraop because 1) there are alot of bacteria in the mouth even in normal people, so even with dental cleanings Dr K recommends extra antibiotics pre and post for pandas kids 2) there may be infection in the tonsils and adenoids themselves (my ds's had pseudomonas) and 3) you're cutting the T & A off thereby providing access for the infection to get into the bloodstream. For many, T & A causes a pandas flare up. My ds was in a constant flare when we did the T & A so I didn't notice any increase in symptoms after it.

I requested it and got it. No questions asked. Our ENT is fantastic! He also had the forethought to write ds a prescription for liquid Augmentin so that he does not have to swallow his daily horse pill. As the mom of a teen patient, that never would have occurred to me.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! :)
