1tiredmama Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Hoping someone sees this in time. Ds is scheduled for surgery at 1pm today. Should he have IV abx during the procedure? He is already taking Augmentin. Thanks!
Kiera Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 I don't think this is on time but yes, I asked my ds's ENT to give iv antibiotica just to cover all bases. Hope it went well!
1tiredmama Posted June 20, 2012 Author Report Posted June 20, 2012 Thanks, Kiera! No, you are not too late. Surgery is on Wednesday at 1:00 (technically "today" since it is after midnight here.) Out of curiosity, why do our kids need the extra abx?
Kiera Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 It's just best to give a dose intraop because 1) there are alot of bacteria in the mouth even in normal people, so even with dental cleanings Dr K recommends extra antibiotics pre and post for pandas kids 2) there may be infection in the tonsils and adenoids themselves (my ds's had pseudomonas) and 3) you're cutting the T & A off thereby providing access for the infection to get into the bloodstream. For many, T & A causes a pandas flare up. My ds was in a constant flare when we did the T & A so I didn't notice any increase in symptoms after it.
ptcgirl Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 My dd had the Iv abx during her t and a. Did fantastically for 9 months. Would recommend Iv abx.
1tiredmama Posted June 21, 2012 Author Report Posted June 21, 2012 I requested it and got it. No questions asked. Our ENT is fantastic! He also had the forethought to write ds a prescription for liquid Augmentin so that he does not have to swallow his daily horse pill. As the mom of a teen patient, that never would have occurred to me. Thanks for the advice, everyone!
