dfw Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 Does anyone know how long it shoud take to see improvement in pandas symptoms after beginning Augmentin (875 mg twice/day)? We've been on for 10 days and no improvement. Prior to that, it was Doxy at 50 mg twice/day which seemed to almost clear her first symptoms, but symptoms began again in May while still on Doxy.
Hopeny Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 We saw improvement very rapidly on Augmentin/Biaxin combo, within a few days, although DD had a few bad days when she started including a mild hallucination. Dr. B's office told me they usually see the most progress after six weeks. Personally I think Biaxin made the difference, I stopped it for 12 hours and DD's suicidal ideations returned that night, I started her right back and they were gone in a couple of days. We also saw a quick improvement on 5 days of Doxy, and will restart that for Lyme again shortly. My DD has Lyme (2 co infections), high Myco, hetero MTHFR677T, and PANS - strep seems to be an instigator for DD but not terribly elevated, and her ASO has come down to the top of normal. Her PANS appears to be Myco/Lyme induced. I will tell you, the OCD symptoms have faded but there is what I am calling collateral damage. DD is not the same, we have withdrawn her from school and have found a private school for her - starting CBT. Maybe Biaxin would be helpful for you to add to the mix. Good luck.
1tiredmama Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 Hello, and welcome! My ds has been on Augmentin for exactly one month today. On Day 4 or 5, we saw marked relief from severe, persistent nausea. He still feels nauseous occasionally, but nothing like before. In the last week, I have noticed that his mental fog is lifting. He is more present and engaged. He is participating in conversation, and showing reasoning and curiosity within those conversations. Before he was mostly in his own head. However, no improvement in tics or anxiety. No improvement in fatigue and other symptoms yet.
PowPow Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 took a few weeks here. they have been on the high doses since end of march. one missed.a few doses in a row 2 weeks ago and it was noticeable!
MomWithOCDSon Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 Like most of the other responses here thus far, we saw not immediate, but very quick results with Augmentin: within about 48 hours we saw some significant behavioral improvements like we hadn't seen in months. I'm thinking maybe Augmentin isn't your child's best offense; maybe try azithromycin instead? It seems like most kids with strep-related PANDAS (as opposed to myco p or lyme) respond well to one of those two. Good luck!
bigmighty Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Augmentin made DS worse in many ways for about five weeks. Small positive changes began in week six. In week seven, DS started a three-week steroid taper making him significantly better. The two weeks after the steroid taper were quite bad, then improvements began again. Five weeks after that, all of his symptoms went into remission. Still on the Augmentin.
dfw Posted June 18, 2012 Author Report Posted June 18, 2012 Thanks for all the replies. We never had a positive strep test, so its hard to just wait and hope on the Augmentin. Appreciate hearing others experiences with it.
ptcgirl Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Different abx work for various infections. If Augmentin doesn't work try a different one. We've had to do this too and it is worth the trial and error.
