colleendonny Posted May 26, 2012 Report Posted May 26, 2012 Was wondering if it is a good brand? It is so much less expensive than Florastor.. Does anyone here use it?
MomWithOCDSon Posted May 26, 2012 Report Posted May 26, 2012 Yep. We've been using it for over 2 years, and it has done a fine job. No complaints, and we haven't seen any difference between it and Florastor, either, which we used religiously as well for the first 6 months or so of DS's illness. Love it (especially the price, as you've noted)!

LNN Posted May 27, 2012 Report Posted May 27, 2012 FWIW - many people seem to do well on Sacc B and everything I've read make it a "good" yeast. I have no idea why, but my DS seems to do poorly on this. He shows brain fog, hyperactivity - "yeast" like behaviors. When we eliminate it, with no other changes, his behaviors improve. Not trying to discourage - like I said, it's supposed to be good for everyone. I only mention it in case you see "yeasty" behaviors - it might not be a Pandas flair but rather a response to the Sacc B. Of course, DS is the exception to the rule in many areas, so your kids might do just fine on it.

tpotter Posted May 27, 2012 Report Posted May 27, 2012 We've also used it for years. Additionally, every time we get our holistic chiropractor to test it on DS, it always comes back as excellent for them. In addition to being cheaper than florastor, it also does not have lactose.
MashedTaters Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 (edited) I was going to order some of this after our florastor runs out. is this product the same 250mg's that the florastor is? And is it an openable capsule? I'd need to put it in applesauce for my 6 year old! Thanks! Okay looked it up: http://www.jarrow.com/product/563/Saccharomyces_Boulardii_MOS It's 50MG less than the florastor. Hm. I wonder if that would make such a huge difference in the potency vs. florastor. Edited May 31, 2012 by MashedTaters
KaraM Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 We've been using this on both of our children for the last year and a half. We open the capsule and mix it in a half a cup of apple cider. It takes a little while to dissolve all the way just using a spoon to mix. We use a little, $3 mini blender fom Ikea and that seems to get most of it. The really great thing about it is that it can be given at the same time as the antibiotics, unlike most other probiotics. So they use it to wash down the disgusting medicine. We order it online, typically through AllStartHealth.com Kara

I wonder if that would make such a huge difference in the potency vs. florastor. Actually, I think it's the organism count (billion units) that matters, rather than the milligrams, since milligrams also includes the food source for the little critters while in the capsule/bottle. Thus far, we've not witnessed any problems associated with "more" rather than "less" sach b., so you might consider adding the contents of a second capsule to the dosing, taking it up to 10 billion units; I don't recall what Florastor's count was, though. When our DS was taking antibiotics, his "sweet spot" for probiotics -- made his tummy feel better and put a halt to diarrhea, but didn't promote excess gas, etc. -- was in the range of 150 to 200 billion units daily! Sounds like a lot, I know, but some folks advocate even more. Now, off of antibiotics, he's taking a total of 55 billion units daily (one mixed probiotic blend with a high unit count - 50 bu, and one Jarrow sach b. of 5 bu), and his gut seems happy and balanced at present. Perhaps a good topic for your integrative physician, DAN!, etc.
