i am trying to protect our family from tics as much as possible. Not sure what Damminex Tubes are. Also....where do you get peremethrin? thanks so much for your help.

I ordered peremethrin off the internet (amazon.com I think). I have yet to use it. If I have this correct from my last research... Damminex tubes are tubes that you put around your yard and mice take the cotton that is soaked iwth peremethrin and make their nest in it and the ticks are killed but it does not harm the mice. I was going to make some with toilet paper tubes wrapped in duct tape and stuffed with soaked cotton. I have not done this yet either. Maybe this year I'll get it together. They say that if you kill the ticks at the mouse level, then they won't go on to jump on larger animals. We have deer in our area but they don't come inside our fence. Only mice and smaller animals (racoons, cats, etc.).

You can get Permethrin at Lowe's, Home Depot, nursery or a garden supply business. I've made my own with cotton balls and toilet paper tubes. Be careful not to get the liquid Permethrin on your skin as it is toxic. Same goes for Sawyer's (or another brand)clothing (and sneaker!!!!) spray. It is OK after it dries to be near your skin, but not when it is liquid.

On the East Coast, the time to use Damminex or Tick Tubes is in June and Sept. It won't make much of a difference this year, but by next Spring, you should have a lot less ticks.

Deer (and birds) bring the ticks into a new area, but the larval and nymph ticks pick up the spirochete and other germs from the mice, chipmunks, moles, birds, squirrels etc.which then gets spread to people. If you can control the mice population, that is a huge help also.

Orion...why would i not use the Damminex or Tick Tubes this June and September? Why did you say deal with it next spring???? Are they not going to a problem this June and Sept.??? Thanks!

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. You do want to use the tubes this June and Sept. Due to the life cycle of the tick, however, you won't see the full benefits of using the tubes until next year. The Fall application will kill off newly-hatched larval ticks feeding on the mice over the fall and winter. So they won't be around to molt into those dangerous poppyseed-sized nymphal ticks next Spring.
