EAMom Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 (edited) I just bought this as a preventative measure b/c I am prone to osteoporosis http://www.amazon.com/Carlson-Labs-Vitamin-K-2-Capsules/dp/B003B3P4I6/ref=cm_rdp_product But, I have also been reading about how K2 is anti-inflammatory (K1 too?). K2 is produced by gut bacteria....so maybe kids on abs would have trouble making it? Here's a blog http://findingtherootcause.blogspot.com/2011/03/vitamin-k2.html and an article http://www.springboard4health.com/notebook/v_k2.html Anti-Inflammatory Further research has demonstrated vitamin K's anti-inflammatory action. As the body ages, levels of the inflammation-promoting cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) increase. Once IL-6 becomes out of ba lance with the other cytokines, inflammation accelerates. It has been observed that people with arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and atherosclerosis have higher levels of IL-6. In a study done by the National Research Institute in Italy, it was shown that subjects with the highest levels of IL-6 were almost twice as likely to develop mobility-related disabilities. Bill Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 I gave Vitamin K2 (2 X90mcg; Jarrow MK-7 from Natto extract) to my son for 4 months. Did not notice a difference so let it run out. bill
fightingmom Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 I bought some, too. Just arrived today.
NancyD Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 I use K2 drops to prevent bloody noses and it helps a LOT!
EAMom Posted May 1, 2012 Author Report Posted May 1, 2012 (edited) What doses are people using? the pills I bought are 5 mg of K2 (which is 5000 mcg which is 6250% of the RDA). (There are studies using (in Japan mainly) 45 mg per day for osteoporosis!) Most pills are closer to 100 mcg (0.1 mg). Here is a study discussed where 5mg of K1 /day (okay, I need to work out the diff. in dose of K1 vs K2) significantly decreased fractures (and cancer!). http://www.womentowomen.com/community/osteoblast/post/High-dose-vitamin-K-New-found-protection-from-bone-fracture-and-cancer.aspx Does 5mg of K1 equate to 5mg of K2?
