peglem Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 My oldest (non PANDAS) daughter just had a baby Monday morning. Thursday at the pediatrician, it was found that he has an infection at the umbilical cord. He is in the hospital getting IV abx. I'm concerned about the infection, but very concerned about post-infectious neuro problems. Is there anything we can do to minimize risk of PANDAS or other post infectious problems? His mom is breast feeding.
Tamistwins Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 I don't know the answer to your question but wanted to say congratulations!!!! Try to enjoy your grandchild and not worry too much, easier said than done I know.

Try to enjoy your grandchild and not worry too much, easier said than done I know. Well, I was totally not worried (I'm certain he is the greatest grandson ever birthed!)until this infection came up. Then I was stunned to realize that I'm more concerned about what might happen after the infection than the infection itself. PTSD I suppose.
Tamistwins Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Make sure you get some probiotics in him since he had Iv abx, now that we know the gut and brain so connected.
dcmom Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Peg- congrats! Enjoy! The worrying just never ends for parents, does it? I feel ill- equipped to even discuss your question, but I will, as I know just talking things out can be such a help. I don't know about preventing pandas, but you can IMHO certainly do two things that would be huge. Number one- vaccines. I would NOT be anti- vaccine if I had another child, however I would determine my own vaccine schedule. I would look at each vax, and think about what the alternative is (not getting the vax, and subsequently possibly getting the illness). I would also determine WHEN the risk was really relevant to MY child, and vax then, not much earlier. I would do one vaccine at a time, when the child has NOT been sick, and I would space them as far apart as possible. I think we learned NOT to medicate with tylenol. The other thing I would do is to be responsive to any infection. I would treat as indicated, and then re check. If I noticed ANY mood issues once the baby is recovered from illness, I would watch carefully. And in this case, advil would be my friend

My grandson is with my PANDAS kid's ped and he knows a lot about PANDAS and will treat and I know that he does not push the vaccine thing. My daughter has already decided no to the HepB. So, I guess we know enough to recognize and deal with it early on if we have to. Can a breastfeeding newborn take probiotics? Have they developed their own flora already?
Tamistwins Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Can Babies Take Probiotics Too? The good news is that babies can also take probiotics. Indeed probiotic supplements have been scientifically shown to help infants! Especially when in abx. Just googled that.
PowPow Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Sorry to hijack, but why no tylenol with vaccines? For babies- What is the reasoning again? Congrats on that grandbaby! Are they culturing the site?
fightingmom Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 (edited) Have any of you tried Lactoferrin? I recently started giving it to my sick cat. It's supposed to strengthen the immune system and ward off viral, fungal, candida and bacterias. I noticed on the bag of the bottle I bought for my cat it said something immunoglobin, too. I have been giving her the bovine colostrom with lactoferrin, but also lactoferring water additives, etc. Here's a link that explains it pretty well and is easy to follow. http://www.worldwidehealth.com/health-article-Lactoferrin-Amazing-Health-Benefits.html And a link to the product I am giving my cat: http://www.luckyvitamin.com/p-19028-symbiotics-lactoferrin-with-colostrum-plus-120-capsules Thoughts? dcmom Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 pow pow- isnt this sad- I don't remember- hopefully someone will chime in. I think there have been a few problems with tylenol lately- I will try to look it up later if no one has the answer!
peglem Posted March 23, 2012 Author Report Posted March 23, 2012 I seem to recall that tylenol messes up methylation?
smartyjones Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 isnt this sad- I don't remember- hopefully someone will chime in. i think it was EAmom who had the 411 on that -- it was something i've been meaning to pay attention to -- but wasn't so much b/c we do motrin now and i knew it would only be another thing to regret b/c i did do tylenol with vaccs. i agree with dcmom about the vaccs. kenneth bock's 4 As book has a good discussion about shedules and individualizing -- of course, i read after my kids were older and fully vacced and i wished i'd had that before but it seemed like a good place to start. dcmom -- i was trying to send you a PM but you've inbox is full. peg -- Congratulations!!!
MomWithOCDSon Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Congratulations, Peg! I'll second Smarty's reference of Kenneth Bock's book. He and his partner have spent a lot of time, thought and practice on preparing expectant moms for toxin-free pregnancies and births, and also protecting infant immune systems. I think that'd be a great resource!
LNN Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 (edited) Tylenol decreases glutathione levels. Yes, and it also decreases/interferes with the body's response to the vaccine, lessening the effectiveness. PS - Congratulations to you and your family, Peg! Edited March 23, 2012 by LLM
