colleendonny Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 Hi all DD5 just started a steroid liquid taper of prednisolone. She started Friday am. We are starting with 2 1/2 teaspoons per day for 6 days then going down. I have broken it up to 1 1/2 am and 1 in the pm. She awoke yesterday not too hungry with a bellyache. And actually asked to go to bed last night. But she was still herself throughout the day. Maybe with a little less energy. She woke us up @ 12 to go to the bathroom and complained of her belly sweating, it wasn't. Then she woke me up at 430 vomiting. Could this be a side effect or more likely a virus?
dcmom Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 colleen- We have not had this type of side effect. Maybe sometimes fatigue, no stomach issues. Also- we do not worry about dosing 12 hours apart (not sure if your doc told you this). Should probably dose with food, esp if there are stomach complaints- we do breakfast and dinner. Is she on abx too?
colleendonny Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 Thanks dcmom- I remember last time she was on Orapred. I believe the prednisolone is the generic for the Orapred... Last time she was more hyper and had no stomach issues. Also last time around she was on Augmentin with it. This time around she is on Augmentin ands Azithromycin, treatment dosage. We do dose with food. So for the steroids, it is not necessary to break it up a little. I am also going to call Dr. B's office today as well to see what they think. Thanks
dcmom Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) colleen- you can break it up, but it doesn't have to be 12 hours. So, I would think you could give abx and steroids at breakfast and dinner, probiotics around lunch (if possible). I misread your post (too early, with daughter hanging on my shoulder) and thought you were waking her up to give it. Edited March 5, 2012 by dcmom
Kiera Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 my ds was put on prevacid for stomach protection, while on a steroid taper as steroids are known to be severe on the stomach.
LNN Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 I would certainly follow your doctor's advice, but just an FYI, when we did tapers, both of our Pandas docs had us give the whole dose in the morning, with food. We were told that because pred can cause you to feel a little wired (especially as it starts to bring down inflammation and you start to be "normal" again), it's better tolerated in the morning so you're not buzzing and bouncing off the walls at night when you're tired yet wound up. We never had stomach upset. But if you do want to give an OTC stomach aid a try, my DD used generic pepcid 20mg when she was 40 lbs. for GERD. Because her issues were worst in the morning, the GI doc had us give it at bedtime so that it was already in her system when she woke up. You could try either 10 or 20mg at bedtime and maybe give the pred with breakfast.
bulldog24 Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Steroids cn cause ulcers, but abx can make the belly mad too. Certainly an antacid cant hurt. Make sure you space it out from other meds. But check with doc. 20mg pepcid seems like a lot though, but not sure. I would also give all of the pred at once in a day unless doc said not to.
colleendonny Posted March 7, 2012 Author Report Posted March 7, 2012 I still haven't talked to Dr.B's office yet. She vomited again Tue night/ Wed AM. Now today she has felt better but has had diahrea 6 times! Poor kid. I'm nervous to give anything without talking to one of the PA's.. Thanks everyone.
