colleendonny Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 My DD has been on abx since early December. Started off with a 15 day prednisone burst along with Augmentin. Now she is on Augmentin and Zithromax. We also found erlichiosis and are waiting for IgeneX results. Anyway, yesterday she was pretty defiant. Now extremely bit she didn't listen to her teacher for the first time in preschool yesterday. Now sure if it was from the PANDAS or from behaving like the other girls. ( her teacher said when she is with this particular group of three other girls, they cam act up.) Anyway she woke early and I gave her meds, like I usually would. I noticed this morning a few things she hasn't done in a while. She said excuse me. She days this because she thinks she farts, but she doesn't really. She also said she bumped her brother "a little hard". Which she didn't. She also said she was scared to get dressed, but she did. I know these symptoms do sound mild, but they ARE back and it makes me wonder why. PS. Her brother woke up with a fever of 102. Could she be reacting to his illness??
dcmom Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 YES! Continue with the antibiotics and consider giving her three days of regular (fever type) dosing of advil. Get the brother swabbed for strep (do you know what he has?). My kids sometimes react to illness exposure. Usually, with advil and time- it is a minor bump- and they get better. Hang in there and don't panic.
LNN Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 I would also chart her symptoms. Lyme has a life cycle of 4 weeks. Other co-infections have different life cycles (don't know what it is for erlichiosis). I would often see blips of behaviors somewhere between the 12th and 16th of the month, despite their being on combo abx. It can get complicated. So keeping a chart, with notes (e.g. 1/31 -brother had fever) can help. If you need a sample, PM me with your email address. Agree with DC Mom - try not to panic. Be aware, give NSAIDs, take good notes, but try not to let it rule your life. (yes, I am being a hypocrite when I say this).
nicklemama Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 She's reacting to brother's illness. Give motrin every 5-6 hrs during wake hours, for a couple of days.
colleendonny Posted February 1, 2012 Author Report Posted February 1, 2012 Is it important to.bring her brother to the pedi? I think he may just have a little virus that is going around. I am giving him children's Advil. Is that just as good as Motrin ? For my PANS DD? If this is going to happen everytime she is around someone who is sick, how do the kids ever get out? What about school? It's bound that many kids walk around school with strep and viruses.
mdmom Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Sounds like she could be reacting to illness around her. We started calling my DS14 "the Canary" because he seems to detect illness in someone before they do. He will come home from a friend's house and say that someone must have been sick in the house because his "brain feels puffy." Amazing.
nicklemama Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Advil and Motrin are the same. Its hard when you have a child who reacts to illnesses. My DS is a reactor. He seems to react only to strep, though.
beeskneesmommy Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 (edited) My son is so sensitive to Strep that, while on daily abx, if he is exposed to someone else, although he does not get infected, he REACTS to the point that his titers actually elevate significantly. Strep presents with "atypical symptoms" in some kids - my son NEVER complained of a sore throat - all he presented with was a fever most times. It would be a great idea to get your sick kiddo swabbed...The abx combo and protocol sound like you may be under the care of Dr. B? Edited February 1, 2012 by Beeskneesmommy
colleendonny Posted February 1, 2012 Author Report Posted February 1, 2012 We are being seen by Dr. B. I think I will take my DS to the pediatric tomorrow to have him swabbed. My DD is more like PANS/ PITAND. What triggered it? Not sure, maybe a sinus infection or the ehrlichiosis. Or maybe Lyme or other TBI's? At our first visit with Dr. B my strep tigers were high. Im not sure if I recall her flaring up more than the norm then. She went out with my mother in law for the day and she said she didn't notice anything... So we will see what tomorrow brings.
MMWG Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Our doc said the latest school of thought on PANDAS is that our kids have such a sensitive antennae that they detect bacterial illnesses (or other kinds) from other people and can react within hours. I have always thought that to be the case in our house. We saw a reaction within an hour to someone who had the flu, and other timeframes with other things. He said the inflammation from being around someone else's illness can trigger any of the neurological symptoms. I echo uppling the abx to treatment dose and using the advil liberally to control inflammation. Stay calm.
beeskneesmommy Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 MMWG, I have no doubt! After dealing with this for over half of my little boy's life, I know that his antibodies react to other, outside illnesses. I watch it happen sometimes. Indeed, it may sound crazy, but I will testify that each time over the latter part of the summer and early Fall that I saw a change in my son, I would ask the mother of the playmate that he was with and inevitably, the playmate had received the live Flu mist within 2-3 days of my son being exposed to him/her. THIS is why we are opting out of vax at this point, at least until his BBB and the rest of his body become more mature and able to handle them! colleen donny, hang in there. Dr B has taken us very far with his protocol and he knows what he is doing. My son is far enough along that I can rate him at 85-100% most fo the time now. When he catches a virus or is exposed to Strep, he takes a dip, but nothing like he was experiencing before. I belive that we are on our way to full recovery. After starting w/ Dr. B last July, our lives rapidly changed from awful, constant crisis, to something pretty close to normal a great part of the time. Kath

Just a few weeks ago my ds8 who is on ABX 500mg and is at day 50 of 60 days came home form school obviously ramping a little. Two days later found out a child in his class was diagnosed with strep. We gave the Advil and kept on the ABX as we have been, within a few days or more he started to come back down to baseline. He was on ABX and STILL reacted. But this is our first round of ABX for PANS. So while he still reacted he absolutely came down much faster! So hold steady, it will be ok! My ds also reacts to non-strep illness in others as well. I keep seeing "Dr B"....can someone tell who this doctor is and where they are at, what type of doc are they? We currently see Dr. Murphy in St Pete.
