EAMom Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/19/health/new-york-students-illness/index.html?c&page=0 CNN article. Seizures is one of Thera's symptoms (she had pre-existing epilepsy). I didn't think epilepsy would make her immune to PANDAS/PANS. (Possibly one of the meds she is on is lowering her seizure threshold? We know PANDAS kids react strangely to psych. meds.) However, I believe she may have something that is closer to (if not) Sydenham's Chorea. Note: Worried Dad's son had seizures (or seizure-like episodes) and he orginally had an SC diagnosis. And here's a new interview (Today Show) featuring a doc from Dent: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/3041426/ns/today-today_health/#46070142 The doc discusses that "Mass Psychogengic Illness" (aka Mass Hysteria) is more commonly seen in "young girls in small towns", also "factories, schools, nunneries, and army barracks." Grrrr. Hmmm, these are all groups of people that are in close contact (thus eaily passing strep back and forth) and also populations with limited resources (financially and in ability to travel) to get a 2nd/3rd opinon to overturn a bogus "mass hysteria" diagnosis. Also, he said some of the girls are getting better, well DUH, that would happen if the girls had SC (although they really should be evaluated to see if they need to be on long term abs!)
peglem Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 I'm so frustrated with this story. While I won't speculate on what the cause is...How can so many people who are intelligent enough to get through med school believe in this stupid, nonsensical mass hysteria dx? Have they lost their ever-lovin' minds? Its complete crap!
trggirl Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 You stated it perfectly Peg. Just amazing.
beeskneesmommy Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 I am disgusted by the "mass hysteria" dx. Shall they also be dx with "female histrionics", which was Freud's answer to women experiencing depression? Aren't we supposed to be beyond that in the 21st century?

Have they lost their ever-lovin' minds? Its complete crap! Unfortunately, the ludicrous "Mass Hysteria" diagnosis is making ME hysterical!
