Dr. B. switched DS to augmentin 875 from keflex 500 mg. It has only been three weeks, but DS has lost a pound a week since starting. He was well below the weight chart to begin with. Since starting augmentin, we have to follow him around and beg him to eat. He does have three meals and two snacks every day. But we are very lucky if any one of those is more than 200 calories. He was eating well and gaining on the keflex. Had been on keflex since september and finally starting to grow after not growing or gaining at all in nine months.

We have a conference call scheduled with Dr. B. on Jan 23. If you were me, would you wait almost a full month more before calling, or would you call him now? I am thinking of contacting as soon as their office re-opens in the new year. I am sure there is a reason why the doc switched DS to the augmentin, so I want to give it a real try before throwing in the towel. Here's what we have seen on augmentin - Herxing days 5-9. But since then - very minor improvements with sensory issues, plus a bit more interest in helping others and more cooperative at home, in general. OCD slightly worse. Appetite reduced to near nonexistent. Ability to pick up on social cues, significantly reduced (almost, at times, to the point that we can't have him go out in public or see people in social situations anymore).

Would you wait longer to see if there is eventual benefit? If not for the weight loss, we would attempt to ride out the increase in ocd and lowering of social cognition. But the weight concerns me. At this point, DS needs to gain 11 pounds to be above the 1st percentile on the weight chart. Anyone else on augmentin or others with insights? Thanks so much - Suzanne

i would not wait out anything involving weight loss. so -- i would speak to dr as soon as possible about your concerns.

when ds7 was first diagnosed, he was put on azith for 5 days. it was terrible. huge increase in some behaviors that had subsided somewhat. we saw no good side. at the time, didn't know about herxing. i was so happy when 5 days ended and he improved off it. about a month later, we went to new ped, who put him on kelfex = 100% remission in about 3 days. but it didn't hold when off abx.

about 1.5 yrs into treatment, he was put on an anti-viral that created an intense herx with food refusal. it only lasted about a week, but it was intense with ds drinking just enough each day to stay out of ER for hydration. very frightening. it was also quite interesting to see in us how what we believed to be a psychiatric/infection issue created a whole host of psychological reactions from us and him as all of us were grasping at straws to fix this. we were in close contact with his dr and it turned around as the dr believed it would but i would not have been able to 'ride it out' w/o that involvement with the dr.

i'd say, get in touch with dr - inform him of ALL that you are seeing - good and bad. perhaps after you speak with him, is there someone else in the office you can keep in contact with daily/every few days to track progress and make further decisions?

good luck!

Thanks. I was told that they would be closed until 1/3. So we will ride it out until then. I sent an e-mail to the nurse's line and will call the doc when they reopen.

They're not closed until 1/3. I just spoke with their office in Stamford (Darien is closed this afternoon, but the nurses are in). Do you need the nurses' email? Or do you need the Stamford number for today? If so, PM me.

By all means, follow what you and your Dr. think is best,

and maybe this is none of my business,

but when you write your child needs to gain 11 pounds to even make 1% on the weight chart for his age,

that is scary to me :-/

My dd started Azithromycin (alone) as her very first antibiotic, had some wows! at first,

then backslid horribly at week 4-6.

Our Dr. at that time then switched her to Augmentin-by itself,

she stopped eating. I tried to push through, but on the 3rd day, when she slid off her chair at the dinner table and curled into a ball on the floor,

I said no way, pulled her off for good.

I'm sure you know all the fatty foods-

Hope he turns a corner for you- PV's---

Thanks. They just called to follow up. Asked me to call them on Wednesday and let them know if we were able to push past it or not. They said the doctor will be back in the office then and we can make a decision.

What about making some extra thick milkshakes and/or fruit slushies? Also, what about something like Boost (add icecream to that). We used to have a similar problem with DS who was off the chart with weight, and it helped.

Thanks. That's something we have done daily and will continue.
