mary
Hi everyone Did anybody watch the show "Miracle Workers" last night on TV? It was at 10:00 pm ch 7 (ABC). The show was amazing. Its about a bunch of cutting edge doctors who performed amazing surgeries. There was a blind man who has lost sight for 22 years. They performed a special surgery for him and was able to let him see from one eye right now until it completely heals and hopefully will do the other eye another year from now. It was the first time he saw his three beautiful kids and wife. It was very touching. Anyway, next Monday there will be a segment with a young girl who has a very bad case of TS and I'm assuming will be performing some type of surgery on her. The previews did not say what exactly will be done for her but it did show you what her and her family life is like. I'm sure it will be very interesting to watch. Just wanted to let everyone know so if they are interested "mark your calendars". Mary

Andy
I am a firm believer that there are many causes of TS or tic conditions and there are quite a few different methods of successful treatments. We have had two posters since I have been here who have mentioned the surgeries as their option. I am sure for some that this is a valid choice. I am concern however since I feel that there is more then one cause of TS that the wrong message of TS being cured only by surgery may be communicated. Anyway with that said I wish that women the best of luck and I hope that those who do need that type of treatment will find the resources to pay for it. Jeff
Don't y'all think that this is just another Hollywood "reality show", complete with exaggeration, over-dramatization, and basically not to be believed? Being the skeptic that I am when it comes to these shows, I find it hard to pay any attention... Do you think it's for real ? Jeff
Guest
Jeff, I imagine it was another deep brain surgery. Deep Brain Surgery is real for tourette's and rather new. Still its only a treatment in my opinion because from what I understand you can turn the device on and off and when you turn it off you tic. If I was faced with the option of Deep Brain Surgery at a time when my tics were very severe I think I would say no to deep brain surgery no matter how much I complained and hated having severe ts during those years. If my tics became severe again for some odd reason I would still say no to deep brain surgery. I consider messing with the brain by doing surgery on it to be serious stuff and would not want it done. Giselle
I guess everyone has to choose what's right for them, and not having TS myself (my son does) I don't think I'd want anyone in my brain but so applaud her right to choose. And would completely support anything my son felt was right for him. . . I think - it would be hard not to put my two cents in but in the end would want him to do what he felt was right. But I SOOOOOOOOOO wish we all could have done blood work, allergy tests, vitamin deficiency tests, yeast tests and food eliminatation before her operation to see if she could have been helped with alternative methods! I guess we'll find out all the things she tried before this operation. What exactly is Deep Brain Surgery? Do they put something in the brain - I assume because you say they can turn it off. I was just commenting to our DAN doctor that whenever I just lightly touch the back of my son's neck or the back of his hand or trace my finger over his forearm he completely stopped ticcing and that I had visions of strapping on a little device that would pulse ever so gently. He thought it was a great idea. Also when we are over at our friend's house the little 5 year old girl loves to run her fingers through Hoyt's hair while they watch TV - it's so cute, he's almost like her blankie because she sucks her thumb as she does this (he has super fine, soft, wavy hair so I can't blame her) but this also eliminates ALL tics! Maybe I should hire her to follow him around during any flare ups! Have a great day! Giselle
Guest
Giselle, Yes, for deep brain surgery they place like a pace maker in the brain. They do the surgery when your awake I believe because they need feedback and then it takes likes 2 weeks before they can turn it on. Here's an aritcle on one of the Deep Brain Surgeries that was done which explains it more: http://www.uhhs.com/DisplayContent.aspx?PageID=337 Carolyn

The surgery (although it has not been officially approved by the health authorities) gives hope to those with very severe motor tics. I was so touched after watching the before and after surgery performed on Jeff because it works! And i just felt SO happy for him i swear my eyes moistened. The surgery is a trial but i sincerely hope he is doing fine and the surgery has no side-effects or consequences like drug medication.. i have copied the link and forward it to my local TS support group. Cheers!
