Just a quick my two cents reply. We were misdiagnosed with PDD--couldn't quite get a handle on what was going on- bright kid, not really Aspergers, but not really autism, so it must be sensory integration disorder (per the doctors) when our son was 3.5. We did tons and tons of therapies to get our son where he needed to be. By first grade we had him to a place where he was looking neuro typical and about to be removed from his IEP - when he got strep and a sinus infection. After the infection we had a totally different kid. Fearful, afraid to sleep alone, to play and be alone, wouldn't even go from the living room to the kitchen without someone with him, plus some OCD's and TIC's began to develop. It took us until 3 months ago (almost two years - or 5.5 if we start when he was 3.5 years)before two of the doctors we are working with told us they believed it was PANDAS - our son is now 9. When our son is in an exacerbation it looks just like Aspergers- with some great rages, meltdowns, and of course OCD's and TIC's thrown in. With abx, most all of the symptoms disappeared or greatly lessoned. It's been amazing!

Nancy- I loved your explanation and agree with you. Panda16 -Yes it's very irritating to lump the two together. We feel it, as we've been misdiagnosed for many years- and even though we have a classic textbook case- son improved remarkably on abx, there is still the doubt or fear- is he really on the spectrum? No, he's not, and we will continue to go forward as we figure this stuff out.
