Noelle Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 Hi, all My son is 9years old and was just diagnosed with Tourette's. I have never had to deal with any illness in my family either physical or mental. I feel clueless and don't know where to even begin to try and help him with this. He is very shy and doesn't express his feelings well and I feel like if I make a big deal out of it-ie. by informing his school, he will hate me but at the same time I don't want him to suffer if we ignore this. I am trying to come to terms with this and will do anything I can for him. His tics are not as severe as they were last spring but they are with him everyday. He also has behaviors which suggest that he may have adhd/ocd/od which we have always stuggled with. What makes this even more difficult is that my youngest son just turned two and started eye-blinking the night before his birthday. I have begun to identify triggers for my older son who is hypersensitive and I suspect may have environmental and food allergies. I haven't been able to access anymore information than what is on the internet and would like to buy some books. I desperately want to help my son and or sons to keep their self-esteem intact. What is the best approach? Sincerely, Noelle
wewillbeatthis Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 Hello, Noelle Please know that many people on this forum share your feelings and frustrations -- my wife and I have been comforted by listening to/reading others as they share their success stories -- I hope you're able to hang in there, as we are trying to do, too, as we help our 12 year old get over (or through) this period.... We recently ordered and read Sheila Rogers' new book: Tics and Tourette's:Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural Treatments. We are certainly not experts, but this seems to be as well-compiled a work as any on the topics of TS+, if not the best we've encountered thus far. Best wishes to you and your family, Wewilbeatthis Hi, all My son is 9years old and was just diagnosed with Tourette's. mommy11 Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Hi Noelle- Take comfort that you are not alone. Read Sheila's book, it will give you hope. Ask questions and remember each hard time (waxing) will pass. My son was diagnosed 4 years ago and to be honest I still have a tough time. There are a lot of people here who can offer you good advice or just comfort you during the tough times. I have come to realize that my sons tics bother me more than him or his friends. I try my best to just reassure him that he is totally normally he just has "habits". I always try to make sure he never feels guilty about ticcing, and it isn't who he is just something he does sometimes. To be honest though, I still break down often on the rough days and just hope he is one of the lucky ones and we see a decrease with age...My son will be 9 in March. Hang in there.
mmazz Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Welcome Noelle; You have come to the right place for information and support. It seems as though you experienced tics for the last year since you received the diagnosis recently. Remember that a diagnosis is just that. It does not change any of the symptoms. It does not present anymore or less of an issue and that the medical community needs to give you this information because it justifies the costs. Now with that being said and with you being new to this forum the information that you will find is overwhelming at times and confusing. It sends you running to the vitamin store looking blankly at a huge wall of bottles. It makes you clean out your pantry and throwing away anything that is not natural. It makes you read the back of everything you eat. All note worthy things but what I learned is you first have to take a deep breath and relax. Remember that this is a life long journey and that we can lessen the symptoms of any illness with proper nutrition, less stress, much love and a lot of prayer. Many here choose supplementation, alternative medicines that include much testings that traditional doctors do not pay much attetnion to. But if you read, proceed slowly, and become the detective that we all have become, the pieces of your puzzle will come togehter. But welcome and if you have any questions just post there are many smart and experienced people on this site. Be Well; Marie
