My husbands son is taking adderallxr for adhd and we don't see his symtpoms. What we see is a child (teen) who misbehaves at his mothers but not at our house is this normal for adhd? Or are we being to insensitive? We really just want to help him. Unfortunately the childs mother has been cought in the past giving this child unneeded meds. We just want to be sure he needs this and if he doesn't need the meds and takes adderallxr what will happen to him? The pediatrition has addmitted he is unable to diagnose this child and is waiting for a child psycologist to assess him. we realy just want to be sure he is safe as they also have him on prozac and xprexia. Thanks in advance for any input. Ruth

Hi Ruth ,

I have a son with adhd tics and anxiety problems which was prescribed adderallxr and zoloft to help deal with his problems. I'm glad that your taking the mother roll and concerning yourself enough to reach out and ask for advice. How dare the real mother give this child medication without consulting a doctor first. the effects that this teen can have can be anywhere from kidney problems to withdrawal symptoms if she decides to stop the medication. doesn't she realize that just because he misbehaves doesnt mean that he has adhd maybe her tactics on how to deal with him arent working and maybe he's just upset with her for some other reasons and he acts up with her a child that has adhd you can tell from a mile away yea they can be quiet in the begining but they cant control themselves for long periods and yes you would see some signs when he is over at your home. How dare this lady take it upon herself to give her son meds without taking her son to the doctor first. i struggle day in and day out with my son and it took me a long time to get him on meds because of the fear of the side effects that it causes or may cause. before prescribing a child medications he needs to be seen by a pediatrician to take blood samples an ekg among other tests to determine which medication and mg are right for that child. if you ask me she just doesnt want to deal with the problem so lets give the kid adhd meds so he doesnt get on my hair. when this child grows up and looks for something stronger like getting into drugs to get him mellow then she'll be crying and wondering what she did wrong well you make sure you remind her of when she gave him meds without consulting a doctor first god bless you for asking and searching and wondering if the mother is doing the right thing. I always say when something doesnt feel right to me it's because there is something wrong. Since she is so free in giving her son adhd pills maybe she should try some herself and then tell dad to get his son into consuling and always be there for him to listen too praise him and love him so that he can know that he's a teen he can tell his mom no i dont want to take something that hasn't been prescribed to me.Good luck and god bless you for your efforts.

Hi, I have 3 children, (girls) my 17 year old, has ADHD, and my 13 year old also. My oldest daughter who is 20 years old, has been very close with her sisters, she doesn't have the symptoms for ADHD. My oldest daughter and her father, (my ex-husband), at their house, has "not" seen any signs of ADHD in my two youngest daughters. My 17 year old, was on "Ritilin" 10mg., when she was 13-14, this made her very sleepy, so her doctor took her off of it, and didn't prescribe her with anything else, and she hasn't been back to her doctor since, for ADHD. My ex-husband claimed that she doesn't have ADHD, now her symptoms are worse then ever. My 13 year old has not been on any medication, but right now, her school is seeing serious signs of ADD. I as their mother, have serious symptoms of adult ADHD, and I'm on "Adderall XR" 20mg., and I also feel I need a higher dose per day. My question to you is, "Does anyone in your family have any signs of ADHD" ? The reason I ask is, that if you have ADHD, you can "see the signs in others", and be able to tell if this child is ADHD. Also he may need to stop taking the "Prozac", because I was on prozac, and I had to stop taking with Adderall XR. If you even know someone who is ADHD, and is on medication, let this person come into contact with your husband's son, then they will be able to see signs, if any at all. There is a "Assessment Test" online for ADHD, go to " Web MD", and ask him these questions, and they rate your answers, and give you a score, to let you know the level he is, and just how serious it is, or if he even has ADHD at all. You can copy this test, and the score, and show to his doctor. This may help !!
