mkur Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 I wish I had known about this earlier - my kids don't have any more baby teeth. Has anyone used xylitol gum or mouthwash before and after the dentist or while having a loose tooth? I found these articles: Effect of xylitol chewing gum on salivary Streptococcus mutans in preschool children http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12119821 Effect of Xylitol on Growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the Presence of Fructose and Sorbitol http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC90255 Thanks
thereishope Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 I haven't tried it but they also make a nasal spray with it that I keep meaning to buy and haven't.I think it's called XClear.
peglem Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Haven't used the mouthwash. I've used the gum, but my daughter can't chew it. The nasal spray we've used consistently and its good stuff!
Mustang Carole Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 HI, I use a teaspoon in my coffee everyday, it helps detox and if you take more.. it is like taking drano. You will get cleaned out fast, can cause some gas and stomach cramps. Plan to stay home that morning. haha. Carole
Sylvia Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 We have used Xlear off and on for years: http://www.xlear.com/nasal-spray.aspx It is supposed to be great for clearing the sinuses of strep. I now realize it has been a while since we have used it, this thread is a great reminder to re-order!
mkur Posted July 29, 2011 Author Report Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) My husband just got back from Dr. B and Dr. B said not to use the nasal spray. Xylitol is a sugar and feeds bacteria. Stick with saline once a week. Edited July 29, 2011 by mkur
thereishope Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 No offense to Dr B, but I would assume he is familiar with the studies associated with Xylitol and how it interacts differently with bacteria than other sweeteners? I'm just curious what his response was so I am familiar with everyone's opinions.
Sylvia Posted August 4, 2011 Report Posted August 4, 2011 Any more info on this? I have not re-ordered yet, but everything I have read points to xylitol being good at keeping strep at bay. My mom (who is 77 today!) has had lifelong, untreated sinsus problems. They got much worse later in life, so I am concerned for the rest of us not to go down that road. Thanks!
