FallingApart Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Way back before we had any idea what was going on with DD, we gave her some sort of low dose psychiatric drug - like a sedative. I don't even remember what it was. Like most of you, she had the reverse reaction and life got really rough. That was pretty much the last time we gave her anything pharmeceutical to help her brain. When we get the results of her SPECT scan today, I'm expecting they will recommend that we use some sort of SSRI or other drug. Now, it's been 2.5 years since all this started and we have done a ton of work for DD biologically. I do believe we are in a different place today than we were then. DH and I are also open to doing anything at all to help our daughter and the rest of our family improve. However, we are still terrified at the memory of our one experience way back when. How many of you have added an SSRI or other drug as time has gone on and you have treated infections? What was the reaction like? Or if you haven't yet done it, are you considering it or are you open to it? Thanks so much!

Zoloft at 25mg/day worked for some three years before it just stopped working no matter what the dose. Then took 4 months to find that Prozac works and has for last 22 months (90lbs, 30mg/day). Can't wait for the day we can stop them but probably can't yet. Tried lowering the dose around Christmas to 20mg/day; as noted, we are back up to 30mg/day. bill
ptcgirl Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Dd11 is on 150 mg of Zoloft. I believe it is helpful. I think it takes the edge off the OCD. Not a cure by any means.
MichaelTampa Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Adult here, tried prozac, was absolutely horrible even at very low dose (10mg/day), this was before diagnosed as lyme. Once I got a bit into treatment, things are much better, no need to consider stuff like that these days. I think it's a bit of a crapshoot.
mommakath Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 I have dd12 who was on prozac for 3 years. Stopped. Started Zoloft 5 months later.....still on it. Can't say it's a miracle drug but I do think it has a place right now. DS10 was horrible on both SSRI's we tried.....he even started spitting them out in the toilet when we were not looking. He did that for a month before he told us because they made him feel so bad. I think you have to try and see. Everyone is different.
dcmom Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 We started dd (10) on 12.5 mg/day of zoloft recently for ocd. It did not seem to be doing anything so we took her off. At the same time she had strep. After that things went south, and mood issues/ mild depression started. We restarted the zoloft, grasping at straws, really. Mood has improved. So- too many variables have changed to really know, it does seem the very low dose of zoloft has improved her mood- which makes it easier to work on the ocd- and things in general easier. We plan to wean her off in the summer, for a real trial as to what it is doing for us. Dr Tanya Murphy did a study with pandas kids and SSRIs. She found, when started at a very low dose, and slowly raising, some pandas kids do benefit.
