Got Aidan's siblings tested and results are in

Hello,

 

I just picked up the results for Aidan's siblings. We suspect Aidan of having congenital Lyme (positive IGenex IGG) and bartonella (negative by IGenex. Different things have been nagging me about his 2 siblings. I asked their ped to order tests for them but I think I know more than her about interpreting them. I need to decide what to do next, if anything.

DD12 does not have a lot of current symptoms but a year ago she had a lot of anxiety, thought her heart was racing, chest tightness, pain in heel, hip (could be explained by growth), stomach aches. Still has some pain in hip/knee occasionally but she is a distance runner and an Irish dancer and does both intensely

DS 10 has had some symptoms in the last couple of months. He had stomach aches, chest pain and had a a positive rapid strep in March. Stomach aches have persisted every few days may have died down some lately. some headaches. He also had ongoing symptoms similar to this 2 years ago. Recently he has also had ankle, shin and knee pain - can be explained by growth and participating in sports. He has little issues = nothing as bad as I see on the board with things like having anxiety over things like sleeping in his own bed and bugs

 

First question - Ds 10 is IGG positive is due mostly to band 31 which I believe is supposed to be very specific for Lyme. I have heard people in the past talk about the band 31 confirmation test. Can someone explain what this is for and if band 31 is very specific - why do this test?

 

Just trying to figure out what to do next. I feel we are already spending a lot of time and money on Aidan's treatment - not sure whether to pursue for the others.

Also waiting for results for myself and dh

Hi Elizabeth,

 

Still too new at this myself to give you much advice. My dd and I are both positive. I also strongly suspect hers is congential. I have a son two years older than her. He doesn't have many outward symptoms like her or I but some subtle ones that no one else would probably notice if they hadn't been down this road. Similar to your situation I believe.

 

I haven't had my son or dh tested yet but would like to do so in the future. My concern is, and someone who is more knowledgable may correct me on this, but I think the jury is still out on whether or not LD can be spread via salvia and other bodily functions (other than breast milk & during pregnancy).

 

I would hate to spend the time & money on healing myself & my dd only to have us recontract the disease from either my dh or ds. YKWIM!

 

Plus my ds may only have subtle, questionable sx right now but what if he wakes up tomorrow & can't walk. I've read stories of kids who go downhill really fast. I would rather be proactive (just my personality) than sit around waiting for the ball to drop.

Certainly they are both very suspicious of lyme, and given aidan's situation, more suspicious.

 

Yes, there is a confirmatory test of sorts on that band 31, hopefully someone can chime in with the details. If you order it soon enough, can probably do it with IGeneX using the same blood they already have.

 

While the jury may be officially out regarding transmission from person to person, I hear about too many situations in families where it is either being transmitted that way, or maybe just being infected by similar mosquitos, I do think real caution is in order regarding possible infections between people, particularly husband/wife. This is something where, due to having real diagnostic testing available, the official jury is going to be out for decades, meanwhile real cases of transmission from person to person are going to keep happening.
