Guest pandas16 Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 (edited) Kind of a side note but any type of inhaler increased my PANDAS symptoms 10 fold. I only had exercised induced asthma but perhaps be careful of them? As for steroids, for PANDAS I was given a 5 week taper which began in the hospital and then several months later- 30mg/kg X 3 days but I was in a research study so I don't know if either of those things would be available now. LNN Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 I'm sorry you had such a dramatic evening! For what it's worth, my DS had 2 one-month tapers of prednisone (don't recall the dosing) and likely had bartonella at the time. We saw positive responses despite this - the autoimmune aspect/symptoms were severe and prednisone brought relief from those. The underlying infection may have benefited, but the overall picture got better because the worst of things improved (at least for the short run). Wouldn't do it again, but I don't think you need to worry about any long term consequences. You correctly decided breathing was more important - it's really hard to cure chronic infections if you can't breathe And I've been told over and over that 4 days isn't a long enough time to suppress the immune system. So the short term use, according to my pedi, will decrease inflammation without compromising the body's ability to fight an infection. As for symptom relief, we saw improvements within a few days.
matis_mom Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Glad things got under control with the wheezing! And as a side-kick you are getting some relief from OCD I would not worry about long term effects of steroids at this point. Just get her stable and take it from there.
jdude Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 My PANDAS son (10) is also asthmatic. When he had a bad wheezing episode in November, he was put on a 10 day prednisone taper. As a side benefit, he was OCD/tic symptom free for 6 weeks after (until next exposure to a lot of strep in the classroom,,that was in January, he is back to symptom free (PANDAS) again (past 3 weeks....fingers crossed....)
