lismom Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 We have been using one or two lemons a day in water. Son will drink this and I know it is good for ph. But wanted to add milk thistle at 4th weekly intense herx. Yes, after all this time not putting things together, I can now see a pattern. I read you should start low, maybe around 100mg or so. I bought Gaia milk thistle. seems very pure. Son is almost adult size in height and weight. Also, can you take this with other supplements?
LNN Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 We have been using one or two lemons a day in water. Out of desperation, we jumped right in this past Friday night and started at 350mg. Seems to have worked wonders, with no side effects that I could see. The owner of our health food store loves Gaia products, but because their pills were lower dose, we'd have ahd to give three across the day and since DS is already taking many pills, I opted for Solara's one pill with 350mg. The owner said some milk thistle can be bound to some other ingredient (didn't catch the name) and it can make the capsule more of an extended release. But she only had the regular stuff on hand. The Mayo Clinic does write ups on herbs and here's their take on dosing http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/silymarin/NS_patient-milkthistle/DSECTION=dosing If anyone knows of a brand I can use or the name of that extended release binding agent, I'd love to know. As for taking with other supplements, we opted to take at bedtime along with probiotics and vitamins so it would sit in the body for a longer period of time. No idea if that's right. I'll be asking LLMD when we go in 4 weeks. There's just so many hours in a day where you can get all this stuff into their little bodies, especially on school days!
MichaelTampa Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Milk thistle is one that has always tested best for me early morning empty stomach before food. I take the paradise herbs brand which is 80% silymarin (200mg silymarin, 250mg capsule). It's a pretty small capsule. Haven't heard of any extended release in the milk thistle, but so much out there. I've never taken more than 1 at a time, never tested for more than 1 per day, but know someone who doesn't take pills steadily that occasionally takes 2 or 3 of these. I imagine milk thistle goes well with most other supplements, don't know of any specifically a bad combination, but perhaps there are some. I like to space out taking other herbs/supplements at least 2 minutes to let the body take in the energy of each one separately, and my pendulum generally seems to agree with this when I ask.
NancyD Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Through our DAN doctor we started with 250 mg Milk Thistle per day and then went to bid and now tid. So DD gets 750 mg daily. Same doctor put me on 250 mg daily.
NancyD Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 Milk thistle helps to protect the liver against toxins. The active ingredient is Silymarin, which is thought to help repair damaged liver cells. It also reduces inflammation and is a strong antioxidant. Prior to taking Milk Thistle my DD was having difficulty staying on Diflucan for more than a few months at a time because her liver levels would rise too high. So she had to take breaks every time her levels rose too high. Since being on Milk Thistle she's been on Diflucan for over a year straight and her liver levels remain low.
