My DS7 (PANDAS) has his first LLMD appointment on April 5th. He has a dentist appointment on Thursday and I'm wondering if there is anything I should know or can do to help him through this appointment. I know he has at least one large cavity. He frequently refuses to brush his teeth and bathe when his OCD is ramped up. He had a cavity filled last summer and he went completely berzerk when the gas wore off. He shrieked repetitively until 1 a.m. and ended up losing his voice. The next day he had a high fever. My 4 year old had dental work last month and also ran a high fever the next day. DS7 is already on antibiotics, is there anything else I can do?

Sorry, I don't really have much advice other than taking in your own safe toothpaste- Weleda and MI paste are the best ones that I have found that aren't toxic. I don't let them do fluoride or use anything with dyes for cleaning and tell the dr they have an autoimmune/immune related disease and not to cause them to bleed when doing a cleaning so the BBB stays closed (there is some controversy about the BBB and that it is open until age 13 anyway... so...?) but still- you don't want the chance of open wounds for strep to get in there. I would refuse gas and not even go to the dentist at all if you can possibly avoid it.

We do a lot of cavity healing and preventative at my house and I would recommend a biological dentist. There are some issues that do have to be addressed, but I recommend getting a Clifford test before getting fillings- it tells which materials your body is okay with.

Here is a link on how we healed my daughter's caries- she had no enamel when her teeth came in and was soon riddled with caries, and she is now 3 and we have changed our diet and dentist and added homeopathics and she is now starting to grow enamel on her teeth!! 2 years after starting this...

Of course, if you have a child that is uncooperative (to say the least!) some of these things won't work. :(

How did the appointment go?

I didn't see this until today, but I'll just add my two cents for future. We see a mercury-free dentist because I was sick from mercury poisoning 7 years ago and had to have all my amalgam fillings removed safely. I would recommend seeing a mercury-free dentist, as they understand the relationship between dental work/problems and neurologic issues. They don't use flouride or amalgam fillings. You can find a dentist in your area - plus more information on how they work - on the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology website. www.iaomt.org

When my son was diagnosed with PANDAS I was terrified to take him to the dentist. When we finally got back in there, I explained the situation and they were very gentle during the cleaning, in an attempt not to release bacteria/stir anything up. It was nice to be going to someone who just "got it."

The appointment went well, thanks for asking! I thought he had a cavity, but he didn't, so that was a relief. He didn't need any work done. I asked them to be very careful with the cleaning. I don't know how he can refuse to brush his teeth for weeks on end and still not get a cavity!!? Things are haywire here anyway since his brothers both had strep throat. DS cultured negative, but he got the scarlet fever rash which faded away the same day, then he got the same type of rash but only inside his elbows (???) that stayed for a week and then peeled. I know his culture was negative, but I'm sure he had strep first and passed it on to his brothers. He's been struggling for several weeks so I knew something was up before his brothers got sick. He's back to pacing, spinning, and miserable-mean. I hope this passes quickly.

Thanks Pixie's Mommy and Mama2Alex for the tips and suggestions for safe dentistry. I'm in a small rural area, with only 1 practice (4 dentists). I hope they will be open to suggestions so I don't have to travel for that too!

I guess I answered too soon. :( He's been crying and shrieking for the last 2 hours. We're supposed to drive 10 hours tomorrow. I wonder if we will end up postponing the trip.
