swim Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 It's been a bad few weeks and there is no improvement. Keflex has worked for almost a year and a half and amox worked for a month. We need to try something else. I know every child is different. Just looking for opinions on augmentin or zithromax. Any thoughts on which to try next? Thanks ...

Zith works different from the others you've tried and has a longer half life. Augmentin is amoxicillan that is "augmented" with clavulanic (probably spelled that wrong)acid. Personally, zith has always worked well for my daughter. Augmentin always ramps up her yeast...so we stick w/ the zith.
EAMom Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) I really prefer Azith. The Augmentin pills are also bigger and have to be given 2x daily to be effective. Azith. has a long half life and can be given 1x daily. We did do a 1 mo. trial of Aug. XR this fall (to see if we could get closer to 100%) and it didn't do anything more for us (vs. Azith.). Our ped also warned us that yeast problems were more likely with the Augmentin. Azith. also has a reputation for being anti-inflammatory/immune modulating, and is better at getting intracellular strep than Augmentin. Some East Coast docs shy away from Azith. b/c there are supposed to be Azith. resistent strains of Strep in the East Coast. I should also note that Azith. has cleared our strep carrier younger dd (non-pandas knock on wood) when Augmentin failed. Edited January 25, 2011 by EAMom
