Compounding supplements and/or Nystatin

A kind soul sent me this info via PM. This pharmacy will compound pills and put it in a stevia base, with no artificial colors. To me it makes most sense for Nystatin, or anyone with yeast issues. Even the antibiotics in sugar solutions.

Curiously, the pharmacist said that often insurance will cover the compounding of supplements IF something that requires a prescription is included. Some companies put a $50 cap on the compounding anyway, it varies.

This pharmacy did the compounding for Pfeiffer for years before Pfeiffer started to do it themselves. Not all supplements can be compounded. It makes no sense to me to compound calcium since it is inherently bulky--more the things with fillers. You really need to have settled on a program before you compound, or be set on a 3 month plan. e.g. this is not cheap and don't do it until you know your child won't react to certain vitamins.

We are ordering some and it should arrive next week, and I will let you know how it tastes. If not good, we will just do capsules. I think you can just get a powder (e.g. to dump into smoothies), but then you would want to not put in the fowlest tasting pills.

Great news. For the 15 vitamins I try to give daily (plus a B-complex, so 16 capsules), I probably average $2.50/day of pills (never have done the math). Anyway, this compounding is actually cheaper--it is only $1.67/day, or $150 for a 90 day supply. Plus I now will only have 5-6 capsules instead of 16 capsules!

Please note that I do a calcium/magnesium chewable by Country Life. The calcium and magnesium are so bulky that compounding them doesn't buy you anything, so in my opinion it is a waste of money.

So I am getting EXACTLY the vitamins I want, no iron/copper, low manganese, plus the special things he needs that aren't in normal vitamins.

This compounding won't include the enzymes/fish oil/probiotics. So he will still swallow 8-9 pills a day still. Better than 19 though. And on some days I can just cut back and give him half doses without missing vital nutrients.

I am really excited about this one.

When to do it: AFTER you have stablized your child and know what works--otherwise you risk throwing away everything. For some things where it fluctuates, like B6/P5P and zinc, I put the base amount in the capsule and figure I can add to it if needed. I targeted amounts that he could use for the whole year.

How to do it: For those of you supplementing under a doctor's direction, I would compile the list with all the current amounts they recommended, then note adjustments up or down that you would like, and fax it to your doctor. We did it over the phone one by one and I spent a small fortune for the phone consultation. This would save time.

The doctor will fax the list to the pharmacy. I worked with Byron, he was sooo helpful and nice, I would ask for him. You never know when someone else might be less patient.

They will give you a price and the number of capsules it reduces to before you commit. I would suggest size 0 capsules. The 00 are just big enough to make a kid gag.

My daughter was prescribed Nystatin from a compounding pharmacy after our first visit with a DAN doctor. It was sweetened with Stevia and was horrible. I called the pharmacy and they reformulated so it was a higher concentration of medicine but you would have to swallow less. That was even worse. Sorry to be negative but that bottle went into the trash months ago. I hope you have better luck.

Bean,

I only ordered 1 week's worth of the Nystatin in Stevia, because I figured their was a high risk my son would hate it. I personally thought it was disgusting, so when he saw my face he wouldn't go near it. I am back to using the pills. So glad I only bought 1 weeks worth.

I do NOT recommend that anyone try this in the future.

The compounding that I am doing for the vitamins is just normal capsules--no liquid.

Claire,

I'm glad you only got a weeks worth because that was money down the drain for us. We too switched over to the pil form but then my daughter got sick to her stomach a couple of times and will not swallow pills anymore. Most of what she needs I can get chewable or a good tasting liquid. We are using capryllic acid in a liquid form to treat yeast. She takes this with no problem.

Bean,

Where did you get the capryllic acid in a liquid form? I would like to investigate that as a possibility for my son. He used to do capsules with no issue, but liquid is easier--we are down to one set of pills/day and you need antifungals 2x/day so this might help.

Claire,

The liquid is called Caprol and my dad gave it to me. He uses a lot of supplements and can't remember where he actually found this one.

It is made by Attogram Corp. out of Canada. There is a sticker on top that says didtibuted by:

Progressive Laboratories

Irving, Texas

75038-7962

This bottle has lasted a while so I haven't looked into finding more yet. I need to soon but haven't had time.Hopefully this Progressive Labs will not be hard to find.

Good luck.

Claire,

My previous post just motivated me to find Progressive Labs at:http://www.progressivelabs.com/nav.htm or the phone number is 800-527-9512.

They appear to sell Caprol still but they didn't have any prices listed.

Nystatin tastes treadful. As most parents I taste everything before giving it to my kid.

We have found thru that giving it with a spoonful of apple sauce makes it goe down easier and we follow it up with a quick drink of 100% juice that is mixed with a probiotic to wash down the mouth and any bad lingering taste. We usually give nystatin a half hour after a meal and before a meal to cut down on the stomach acid burning it up before it gets to the small intestines. We give the powder form three times a day.
