Tic Increase

Hi there

We seem to have had quite a quiet Christmas on the tic front. I hardly saw my DS (9) tic at all.

He still had the nose exhalation noises he was making but only saw the eye blinking perhaps once or twice a day or not at all.

We went to an Allergy specialist on Saturday who confirmed my son was allergic to dustmites. However, we already try to keep the house as dust free as we can. The Allergy Specialist also suggested cutting dairy out which we have done since Sunday.

However, both yesterday and today I have noticed a considerable increase in tics. He appears to be puffing out of his nose, nodding his head and blinking all at the same time. I feel very upset as I thought things were improving.

I was wondering if cutting out the dairy could be causing the increase - he did drink a lot of milk and ate cheese most days in his school lunch.

I have been giving him Kids Calm, Omega 3 and Epsom bath salts every day since about November. I thought they were helping. Wondering if this is just the wax and waning nature.

I was also thinking of stopping the Kids Calm and moving onto a pure magnesium supplement - any good ones you can suggest as I know there are lots of different type of magnesium?

He might just be waxing just because he is. Yet, there are so many factors to consider, not just allergies. Stress(good and bad) and even the cycle of the moon seem to affect my ds' tics more so that his allergies. Have you tried nightly epsom salts baths? They may not stop the tics for us but they do relax ds enough so he can get a good night's rest and he seems calmer and less 'ticcy' in the AM, especially if he's waxing. As for the magnesium: I give a liquid cal/mag supplement from either Bluebonnet or Lifetime vitamins. My ds doesn't like the Natural Calm as he just doesn't care for the taste so we've been using these liquids for at least a year. I honestly can't say if they help but I believe in magnesium supplementation for everyone in our family, not just for ds for tics.
