Wilma Jenks Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Right now she is on: 9:45am Azith (250mg.) and Nystatin 500,000 10:45am 1 -Charcoal 12:45pm Nystatin and Lamictal. (5mg.) 7:00pm Nystatin 8pmpm 1 Charcoal 9:00pm 3mg. Melatonin, 25mg. Seroquel Probiotics I see some things improve, like she is not as stuck in her own little world. She is not ransacking the cabinets for sugar, she is not running into the street at midnight, but she is impulsive. She stuck her already chewed gum into my mouth. She has us on pins and needles. How long does it take to see some good improvement? I started the antibiotcs and treating of pandas on december 4th. Is it too early to see really good results? I guess I just need some reassurance. thanks
nicklemama Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Wilma- Is the 5mg of Lamictal a typo? That is a very tiny dose. My DS7 takes 50mgs lamictal 2x a day. 75-100mgs is considered the bottom of a therapeutic dose. My DS started out at 25mgs a day and it took several months to work up to 100mgs. We did see a reduction in the raging from lamictal but it did not totally wipe it out. Cindy
Wilma Jenks Posted January 7, 2011 Author Report Posted January 7, 2011 Every time I go up high on anything she rages for days. In the past... the pscychiatrist had us go up slowly, but we only got to 25mg. becuase she raged for days and days and it never went away. scott thinks she reacts this way since her gut is so torn up and toxins are coming through and targeting her brain. i don't know for sure.
MomWithOCDSon Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Unfortunately, I don't think there's any one correct answer here. But honestly, were I in your shoes, I would by now begin to wonder if either a) I'm trying the wrong antibiotic for my child's particular situation and/or perhaps, something else I'm giving my child might be contributing to her condition and sort of "voiding" positive ground that may be achieved via PANDAS and/or yeast treatment. In our experience, and from reading others here, I would think that by now you should have seen some improvement, however small, if the antibiotic was appropriate for your daughter's condition. Our first positive results were visible within 48 hours of first dosing the antibiotics; within 30 days, we'd seen a significant reduction in both OCD behaviors and emotional lability. Have you tried any other antibiotic besides azith? Some kids respond really well to azith, but some do not; some, like my DS, respond remarkably well to Augmentin. Since these two abx lie in entirely different classes (macrolide versus b-lactams) and therefore work via different mechanisms, it is possible that your child will respond more positively to one class than the other. The other thing is the Seroquel. My DS is currently taking a low-dose SSRI, so I'm not one who's categorically opposed to psychiatric medications; I know from experience that they can be helpful. But I'm sure you've seen here the cautions about some of these medications and their impact upon some PANDAS kids. We had terrible results with both Seroquel and Abilify, despite the fact that low doses of SSRI's (different ones at different points in time, but we've had some success with each of Luvox, Lexapro and Zoloft over the years) have generally been of assistance. So, again, every kid is different and perhaps the Seroquel is having no ill impact upon your child at all, but it might be worth considering.

Wilma Jenks Posted January 8, 2011 Author Report Posted January 8, 2011 My girl is 11. Is 250mg. considered low for that age?
