Our son was diagnosed with PANDAS several weeks ago. We are making a trip to Conn to see Dr. B at the end of January and are wondering what to expect with the first visit. I have read all the posts about what to bring re: testing etc. But, I am wondering how long the appointment will be and whether there are other things that might be helpful to bring besides blood test results. Are their typical things that Dr. B wants to know from us as parents. Most of all we are hoping that Dr. B can tell us whether it is OCD or OCD caused by PANDAS. Nobody in Maine seems to be able to tell us this. Our son doesn't have many of the symptoms that people have shared, but this is also the first time we have seen anything thing like this in him. He definitely has the acute onset. Thanks for all of the advice.

Our visit was approx 45 min. I only had my journal and kid with me. He may ask you specific questions regarding your sons OCD, and it is very helpfull to know your familys medical history. While he is asking his questions he will be observing your son. For instance, what we thought was ocd in our kid was actually sensory tactile. Your families history could show autoimmune disorders run in the family. Really though, he makes it easy on you by just asking the right questions that you will probably know off the top of your head.

Good luck, he is a very nice guy.

I would suggest that you contact his office, and ask them if they will send you orders for any tests that he may want to see. You can then get it done in time for the visit. That way, when you get there, he will already have them in your chart, and this will help him make a dx. He did that for us.

My dd9 had overnight OCD as the only symptom. Thinking back, maybe we had a few symptoms prior, but we have 3 kids, and the others had more symptoms of random weirdness than she did - and one of them is now an engineering major at Ivy League school -my point being that it is tough to know if your kid is just being a unique kid, or if there is something out of the ordinary that you should be worried about. After 5 months, that is still the only symptom. She is doing much, much better now after Dr. B's treatment. You are in great hands! We had done the testing he recommended prior to the appointment, and he had the results. He is wonderful, doesn't want a lot of info to read, he will just ask the right questions and assess your child.

We see Dr. B as well. You may want to visit the Pandasresourcenetwork.com and sign up as a member. The exec. dir. will get back with you and can give you some guidance on what tests he'll likely recommend. (she works alongside him with this new nonprofit) We brought some basic bloods tests and Lyme test with us that our ped ordered but they were of little help. He typically orders specialized blood tests from a lab in CA. On another note, his office has a discount with Doubletree Hotel in Norwalk. They're about 1/2 off the price. Just ask his receptionist for the contact name at the hotel. hope this helps. good luck. you are in good hands.

We're traveling from OH to see Dr. B. for the first time at the end of Jan. also. Good luck to you!! (I've had some of the same questions--I called back for a list of the tests, and the receptionist said she can fax it to me.)
