Does anyone have the name of a good psychiatrist who understands PANDAS? The hospital where she was wants me to follow up with a psychiatrist; however, I want to be sure we have one who is familiar with PANDAS & won't add psych meds that could further exacerbate the situation. We are in Virginia. Thanks!!

Hi,

I am in nj and from my experience psychiatrists no longer give therapy... All they do is medicate. Before I was aware of pandas..I took my son to a psychiatrist for his ocd. It was a 15 minute appointment all he did was write down the history and give a script for ssri. He did say that years ago psychiatrists were there for therapy too but now psychologists give therapy and psychiatrists

What we need is a psychiatrist to evaluate her meds as we were told in hospital they want us to have one. Honestly, my view is that she really needs an immunologist more than a psychiatrist and I am kind of opposed to all the psych meds for an immunologically based condition, especially when some are known to exacerbate the situation. However, I will comply and see one who I know is familiar with PANDAS... but, I'm not about to drop the Immunological piece of it that I believe she needs most. I hate all these bandaids - I want to resolve the underlying issue... but, I realize I am preaching to the choir.

I think what they mainly want is for someone to evaluate the decrease in Prozac as we seek to wean her off that & to have a point of contact. I made an appointment with someone we saw here over a year ago, but honestly, in an emergent situation, I'm more likely to advocate for the IVIg she apparently needs.

We're about 3 hours from DC area.

I did make an appointment with a psychiatrist we saw here about a year ago. He knows about PANDAS; but, is difficult to understand due to English not being his first language.

Where in VA? We are in MD but 5 miles from DC and have someone we can recommend if you are close to DC

Thanks, but Duke is no closer than DC area for us. We are not so far from the hospital that admitted her and ran the IVIg infusions, so I think we'll just see the one we saw before to have as a part of the medical team, although I anticipate his main role will be in weaning her off the SSRI as we work more closely with the Immunologists and Neurologists.

Are u near nc? Is duke an option?
