Vitamin B6 & Zinc

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I've heard that B6 and Zinc are good to help combat vocal tics. Does anyone know the right quantity to give a 5 year old? Our environmental MD didn't know anything about it. She did prescribed 25 ml of Zinc a day to counteract a 'cadmium' metal overload that was discovered through a 24 hour urine collection.

Thanks,

Dara

Dara;

I too have trouble with the dose for a child. I have been on every web site to get a clue as to what is a good dose. I tried a multi and a childrens B complex and found, through trial and error, that after a month on the B Complex that it just gave my son such energy that it increase his anxiety thus causing more tics. So, I eliminated the B's. I have read many books lately, the best I found was oddly enough a juicing book. I have made the effort into hydraulic press juicing with fresh carrots to detox the liver and spinach which aids in cleansing the body. The way I look at the body is as a whole...mind, body and spirit. Nutrition is key to help the keep the cells from starvation. When are cells are starving it creates an evironment for disease. The disease can be anywhere within the body. In our case it is neurological. As the cells die off new cells are created. If our body cannot pass the old cells and waste off efficiently they can and most likely will get reabsorbed within the body causing more damage. Nutrition in an organic manner will provide new cell growth, but only if we can eliminate the waste daily so reabsorbtion is not an issue. So my thought and advise is supplements are great but assemilation and dosing is better by jucing fresh veggies. In using carrots and spinach you will have proper dosing of all benefical vitamins from A through K and will receive an ample supply of minerals cal/mag in particular. Spinach is a natural laxative which will aid in the elimination of the body waste and is a great source of vitamins and minerals. Beta Carotene is a great antioxidant and although it will turn your skin a glowing orange, it will serve your body well! My family has been juicing for about 6 weeks and I have seen many great results, from the clearing of acne, the stopping of snoring and the lessening of anxiety which resulted in the lessening of tics. Remember your car can't run on water it needs gas and some cars need high test. Our children are no longer being strolled in strollers, carried on our hips. They are in school full time, playing sports or with friends, staying up later and waking up early. Their brains are kicking into action and this all requires nutritients. Some may require more than others. Immunizations and environmental issues and allergies just make things worse. So much turns on at this age and we are left to guess what is happening and to try to make it better. This site provides such great insight and I feel blessed that I have learned so much here that did, can and will help in areas from colds to tics.

As for the emotional part, I can tell you this...my son tics more when I am stressed then when he is stressed. I've seen this with my own eyes. I have cried, starved myself, placed much blame on myself, my husband and our genes. I have placed stress on my marriage that I know that we will never be the same and the worry did nothing but made a bad situation much worse. Our children need us!!! I have learned this in the much recent past. Take time for yourself, it is time to place that rearview mirror back in its place, it is time to stop looking at every move and wondering is that a tic? Teaching ourselves to let go of the anxiety that this causes teaches our kids a far greater lesson on how they should react to stress. They learn from what we do. I still cry but it is in the closet (the one where I keep the tissues). Good luck and keep trying cause we just may be one try away from success.

Great Advise Marie,

OK, so you bought a juicer and you throw carrots and spinach in it and your son drinks it just like that???? Wow. I'm impressed. I just recently added more B6 because I heard it helped with vocal tics but maybe I should think twice since his tics have gotten worse within the last 2 or three days.

The part about me being stressed out. Before any of this happened I already had a type-A personality. Unfortunately, it's the only way I know of dealing with this situation. I obsess about the 'what if'. What if Karl's tics are so bad, he can't go out in public, get a job, get married, have friends, etc. I just keep thinking what a condition like this could do to a person's self esteem. Me and my husband are always there for my son Karl and his brother Graham. We love them, kiss them, do everything with them. I've never cried in front of him. In fact, he's never mentioned anything about his tics, not once. I think he knows he's different than other kids, but he's never asked. He does know that he has allergies (food and inhalent) and doesn't hesitate to tell people that he's allergic to this and that. He's such a great kid. I will never stop trying to find a solution to our situation. Thanks for your advise and for listening.

Hi Dara:

I too am Type A, but strange enough the lifestle change I made for my son was family wide and now I'm type A- , and looking forward to downgrading further. If you can, try researching a book by Norman Walker entitled Fresh Juices. It is only 74 pages but it teaches you so much about nutritents and the body.

I know and feel your pain. But know that our children are perfect despite their tics. I have read some posts on brain talk from others who live with this and their advise was that they lived wonderful lives in spite of their tics and did so because of the loving environment their parents gave them. Acceptance, support and encouragement seems to be the key. In my other posts I spoke about my older son having asthma since age 4. I thought back then the it was going to halt his life, like living in a bubble. No sports, excercise and alway on medicine. Today he is 12 and captain of his hockey team and has made the All Star Team for 3 years in a row. He is extremely physical and in spite of his asthma and he excels at everything he puts his mind to. I often think that without asthma he probably would have not taken the challenges that he has and stayed within the box. But he and his father were out of the box thinkers and much to my surprise and delight we live like everyone else. This too will happen for our little ones, but only if we see pass the limits that one would ordinarally place on disorders like tics or asthma. In being upfront with many of my firends, I have found that their children tic too. In the last two weeks there are about 5 children that I know that tic but never realized it and their moms never offered the information because of the stigmatism associated with it. About 5% of school aged children tic and my nuerologist (whose dauaghter also tics) states that 85% grow out of it. One of my friends ticced as a child and still tics but I never noticed until she told me.

The worries we feel for our children will always be there whatever the nature, but we can not place limitations on them. It is easy to keep them inside away from outside triggers but that does not allow them to learn and grow. There will always be children that will tease. I've have seen the most perfect of children teased because that is what children do. If you don't have anything to tease about they just make stuff up! Your child will be just fine, he will grow, learn and have a great life becuase he has a caring mother who is loving and will do anything to make his life as perfect as it can be. Your son is lucky to have someone like you in his corner. God Bless and keep up the good work.
