TracyRee Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 DS hasn't had any tics or ocd since diagnosis 2 years ago. (obsessive urination, positive strep test and behavior subsided after 24hrs on abx) He's been on low dose abx since january. 200mg 2x per week zithro. his behavior problems continue. Chronic irritabily, aggression, zero impulse control... he's been diagnosed with asperger's as well. i was wondering if we should be pursuing a steroid burst treatment to see if it helps. thoughts? I WANT MY LITTLE BOY BACK!!!
thereishope Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 (edited) When I did a steroid burst with my son, I actually pursued it becasue he wasn't eating anything, losing weight and was threatening to do self harm. His OCD was also debilitating, but that wasn't even the reason I wanted one. I have read some parents on here saying the first steroid burst they did on their child worked, but a subsequent one didn't do the same magic. I really don't know why or all the factors involved (whether the dosage varied, the time between bursts, etc). But this is something to keep in the back of your head if you choose to do one. Has he had a steroid before? How does he react to any other anti-inflammtories (ie Ibuprofen)? Have you thought about trying to increae the abs just to see if it would help with the remaining symptoms? Note: I do NOT know dosing for antibiotics so hopefully someone else will chime in about that. Edited November 14, 2010 by Vickie
TracyRee Posted November 14, 2010 Author Report Posted November 14, 2010 Thanks Vickie. We're not seeing any ocd, tics, not eating, self harm... we're seeing chronic irritability, hitting, zero eye contact, social behavior problems. All things that fit the Asperger's diagnosis. I guess what I'm asking is could all these things we've chalked up to Asperger's actually be pandas symptoms and therefore treatable? Without tics and ocd as symptoms, do we assume it's not pandas related problems?
EAMom Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 I guess what I'm asking is could all these things we've chalked up to Asperger's actually be pandas symptoms and therefore treatable? YES!!! These symptoms could definitely be PANDAS (even without OCD/tics). I agree with Vickie, that I would try full-strength antibiotics b-4 proceeding to a burst. How much does your son weigh? 200mg Azith. per week sounds REALLY low to me. The advil is also a good idea. If 1mo. full-strength Azith. doesn't help, I would even consider another antibiotic (full-strength) like Augmentin. our experience re bursts: with our dd, they did help but it took a couple of weeks AFTER the end of the burst (we did 5-6 days) to see an improvement. While she was on the steroids, she was, if anything, more irritable.
