justinekno Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Did I read somewhere that a vitamin D deficiency is common with Lyme? I just got my son's bloodwork and his vit D levels aren't as high as they used to be and he is constantly outside playing and we also supplement. I was somewhat surprised.
mama2alex Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Our son tested Vit. D deficient as well. We supplemented with 2,000 IU's a day. Next test he was up to 37, but our LLMD said optimal range for Lyme treatement is 60 - 70, so I assume they will up his supplementation at our next visit. My son is outside a lot too and we live in California, so he should get enough just from that. I assume its an absorption problem - both skin and gut.
Suzan Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Yes, I have read that too and I have had a very hard time keeping my vitamin D levels up. Susan
NancyD Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 (edited) I too have read that vitamin D deficiency is common with Lyme, PANDAS, and other automimmune disorders. Dr. L said DD14 D levels (7) were catastrophically low in April when she was in severe exacerbation and getting one skin infection after another. Of course, this was before she was diagnosed with Lyme. She put her on 50,000 IUs per week for 4 months and at last read they were up to 45. She is now taking 1000 IUs per week. Going to check levels again today. Edited October 27, 2010 by NancyD
justinekno Posted October 27, 2010 Author Report Posted October 27, 2010 My son's levels were 54 a year ago and now they are 38. I'm sure our LLMD will up the dosage but I just thought it was odd that the numbers are going down instead of up. Did I read somewhere that a vitamin D deficiency is common with Lyme? I just got my son's bloodwork and his vit D levels aren't as high as they used to be and he is constantly outside playing and we also supplement. I was somewhat surprised.
MichaelTampa Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Yes, very common. Then there are the very occasional lymies where the levels are extremely high, way out of range. There is a real lesson in there for the regular docs who monitor those levels, to not just keep responding by recommending supplementing with vitD and then upping the dosage when that doesn't work and so on. Perhaps the supplementation is helpful, it probably is in the majority of cases, but there is a time to realize that the body is not responding normally to supplementation and use that as a real clue...
NancyD Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Amen!!
