Hello,

I've been reading this forum for about two weeks now. My 11-year-old son has been having strange symptoms (nothing easy to pinpoint) for about a year now, but his angry outbursts have become more frequent and frightening. I've related so much to the devastating emotional toll people have reported experiencing with these behaviors in others. First we tried the therapy route which was frought with much abuse and trauma, and I've been investigating physical causes now, like P.A.N.D.A.S., post-concussion syndrome, lyme disease, and very possibly celiac disease and/or gluten/wheat sensitivity/intolerance.

My reason for posting now is to try to find doctors in my area (Houston and beyond) that deal with such auto-immune disorders. We have an appointment referral from my PCP with a pediatric neurologist in about 2 weeks, but I have little hope that he will know (or believe in) how auto-immune disorders can cause this range of physical and neurological symptoms. We also have an appointment with a naturopathic doctor next week so he might have something to offer. In any case, I've reached a point where I know I won't last with this much longer if we don't get help soon from someone who knows what's going on. I realize this will very likely take a lot more time to resolve than I would wish, and even typing those words, I can't even fathom how I'm going to make it through.

If anyone knows of any LLMD or P.A.N.D.A.S. or other sympathetic doctors in my area or even in a nearby state, would you send me a personal message? It's my first time posting, so I don't know if you can already see my e-mail or not, or if I need to do something on my end in order to get personal messages.

Many thanks for any help you can offer,

SearchingMom

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear your family is going through this, but glad you found this forum. Did you see Saidie10's post on the doctor she found in San Antonio? If you click on her name (next to her post), then find where it says "Send a Message" and click on that, you'll be able to send her a private message (PM) and get the name of the doctor.

Best of luck!

Welcome. While waiting for an appointment elsewhere, you can do some basic things like have your pediatrician give your son a strep test. If he has an infection, therapy alone will not rid the problem. If he has a detectable infection, he can start antibiotics immediately. In my opinion, every day counts when the child is not on antibiotics. He needs to get rid of any infection before recovery begins. Many kids do not respond to therapy until antibiotics play a role for awhile. Also note that strep occurs in more places than the throat. It can also be in the sinuses, gut, anal, and more. Just because he doesn't have strep throat, doesn't mean he doesn't have strep. If a rapid and culture both come back negative, you can do blood tests as well.

Searching Mom-- You can see a list of parent generated doctors who have been helpful with PANDAS issues. Go to the main PANDAS Forum page and at the top of the page, under "Helpful Threads" there is a post which Parents add to periodically--Hope that is helpful.

Keep looking--that is what we all have done, and continue to do, to see our children through to the wellness they deserve.

SearchingMom - I'm also in Houston and have struggled to find a doctor that will treat. We eventually went to Dr. L in DC for a diagnosis but it shouldn't be this hard given we have the medical center here. There are some doctors that diagnosis and treat in the Dallas area - PM me if you haven't already found their names off the list of doctors on this site. I also wanted you to know that we are starting a support group at the end of the month - meeting in The Woodlands. There may be some ideas about doctors there...we'd love to have you. Let me know if you'd like details.

Here's a link to the consolidated list of doctors by state, which Suzan posted in January. You'll want to check the thread T.Mom mentions above for a posts after January regarding Texas docs, in case they aren't on that list.
