Is Augmentin 250 mg + Amoxicillin 250mg= Augmentin 500mg???

I'm trying to figure out if I have enough to get both girls started while I wait for these scripts to be called in...

This combo would have less total clavulanic acid than 500 mg of aug, but I'd think it's close enough for rock-n-roll to get things started.

Good luck!

WD,

I thought the proportion went 250/125, 500/125,

so that two 250 mg tabs of Aug had twice the Clav of one 500

You can do two 500mg Aug and not exceed the daily max 250 Clav, but you couldn't do four 250mg Aug, bcs that would be the same 1000mg but twice as much Clav.

Am I right or all screwy

Can someone please explain what the clavulanic acid does exactly? My son's doc only prescribed amoxicillin (500 mg, 2xday) for 30 days. Are we wasting our time?

The clavulanic acid "activates" the amoxicillin, i.e., augments its capabilities (hence, the term for the blended med name, "Augmentin.")

How or why it seems to be more effective for many PANDAS kids over regular amoxicillin is up for debate. There are studies underway now regarding the potential antidepressant characteristics of clavulanic acid.

Are you seeing a positive response on the amoxicillin? If so, it is potentially effective for this run-in with PANDAS. You may find, however, that it is neither effective continually, or that should there be a future exacerbation (let's hope not!), the amoxicillin will not remain impactful. Then I would definitely reach for the Augmentin!

Actually 250 mg of Aug. has the same c. acid as the 500mg....so, yes, 250 mg Amox. plus 250 Aug. equals one 500 mg Aug. pill.

But, 2 250 mg Aug. pills DOES not equal one 500 mg Aug. pill....too much c.acid!

So, no Jag...you are not screwy...or, amybe we both are! :D
