3boysmom Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Just now while I was posting our Texas support group, our ds10 yells down the stairs, "Mom, I have a sore throat!" He is on Augmentin XR 1000 x2. Can you get strep on such a high dose of antibiotics? If so, then what do you add? He has been improving with Augmentin XR over the last 4 months, so I don't want to remove...just add. Is that an option? Our appointment with Dr. L. in Maryland is not until Sept. 15th. Thanks again, as always, Linda
Suzan Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 I have heard of 2nd abx being added but I don't personally have any experience with it. My dd's get sore throats a lot but they always go away the next day. It seems to be a symptom of theirs like tummy aches. Would your local doc help out? Even if the swab is negative from the abx, the culture should grow right? Susan

Thanks again, as always, Linda Linda, Take him to the pediatrician and get it checked out. My son has been doing great in XR, but when his siblings were sick (two strep throats, two ear infections!), he did get an ear infection. The pediatrician was surprised but understood we needed to take care of it, so she gave him Rifampin for 10 days (in addition to the Augmentin). You really need a good pediatrician because you can't go running to Dr. Latimer every time he gets sick. After that ear infection we had a follow-up with Dr. L, and she said it was a good thing they had put him on Rifampin. Also, I would check all the kids just in case... It has always been the case when PANDAS ds is not doing well, someone has strep. Good luck! Isabel Edited August 9, 2010 by mati's mom
