JAG10 Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 (edited) Alex- are you back in the states? How's your family? I was thinking about you , your wife and kids with Independence Day approaching and hope all is well. Sorry if I outed (reserves) you unwillingly. Many of us were thinking of you on Father's Day and wanted to extend a sincere thank you for your selfless service. Edited June 30, 2010 by JAG10
Alex Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Yes, got back a few days ago. My reserve duty was in Europe. The most dangerous part was when someone hit a wild shot on the golf course and forgot to yell 'fore'. But thanks for the thoughts. My sincere thanks to those in harms way on our behalf. My son is about 5 weeks post a second IVIG. Things are good but not great. I haven't been posting much because we weren't in a position to say IVIG was a phenomenal success but we also couldn't say it was anything close to a failure. IVIG took my son from a crisis to a fairly good place. Maybe over time we will see ( as at least a few others on here have seen) that the improvements continue over a year or more. He was doing really well after the first IVIG until an ear infection set him back significantly( similar to when he was doing great after PEX before a tooth infection caused a comple relapse). We are fortunate that our insurance covers IVIG for PANDAS so we decided to proceed with a second round when he seemed to not be rebounding from the setback. Dr. K wanted us to wait a little longer but I was leaving for close to a month and my son was really struggling and as a result my wife would have struggled tremendously in my absence. The positive results from the second IVIG were evident within a week. Our experience is that since the initial GABHS episode triggering the PANDAS, any infection causes major flares for my son. Hopefully we can keep him infection free and continue to see progress. Again, thanks for the thoughts and prayers. I'm more than a little embarrassed that some may have pictured me leading patrols in the Afghan/ Pakistan border region. Alex- are you back in the states? How's your family? dcmom Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Alex- no embarrassment needed- thank goodness you are not in harms way- your family has enough to deal with right now. I am SO glad to hear you are seeing improvement in your son. I really think time is a huge factor in healing, that we just cannot bypass. As you know, pex was successful for my girls- but only time spent healing has truly brought them to 100%. Caroline was just as you describe your son- pex ended the crisis- but she needed time (and we did some therapy) to bring her to where she is today. Hope you see continued improvement!
kimballot Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Ales - Thank you for serving.. wherever it is... wherever it needs to be. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you wife for her sacrifice while you are gone. Glad to hear you have IVIG covered and your son is doing better since his last treatment. Best wishes!
lss Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Alex, Glad to hear that your son is doing better. We seem to have the same issue after Plasmapheresis as you and we're heading to Chicago tomorrow for 2nd IVIG. Not sure what set things in motion for us again, but we're back to square one as well. Teeth cleaning seemed to cause a flare as well. Hope you continue to see improvement post IVIG. Regards to D. Linda
JAG10 Posted June 30, 2010 Author Report Posted June 30, 2010 Alex- Anyone in the military can find themselves in harms way in the blink of an eye. Your sacrifice and that of your family contribute to keeping each of us secure. I will say a special prayer for you and your family as my family has the luxury of watching fireworks this Sunday. I'm also voting and crossing my fingers for Tunes for Troops in the 5K!!!!
