Tic/ Compulsion question

My ds does this rolling with his hand ( it's like he is rolling his wrist around but does it up against something)- up against his head, on his body, on things- is this a tic or a compulsion?

Is he aware he's doing it? Does he choose to do it?

 

Because it is something of an extended and complex motion, I would tend to think it is a compulsion, rather than a tic, but I think the line there can be thing.
