marie33
PLEASE HELP with recommendations on amounts of vitamin and minerals. We have a 6 year old daughter who just started having tics in July. She is 49 inches and 52lbs. She started with eye twitches and head shakes and possible throat noises. We have been to two different neurologists. The second one was more helpful. However, I'm still unsure on levels of vitamins and minerals she can take. He said Flinstone vitamins were ok to take and to supplement with fish oil. However, my daughter has to take liquid form and the fish oil also includes Vitamin A, D, and E. I'm wondering what the maximum amount of these vitamins can she take since these are also included in her multivitamin (flintstone). I understand from all the reading and posts that she needs magensium supplement and started giving this to her at a rate of about 100 mg a day through floradix. However, I think she needs the combo one with mag/cal/zinc. Can someone recommend what they use for this and the amount for her? Also, what would be the best supplement for her vocal tics which have been almost nonstop for about a week? How much? Also, what are others using for a multivitamin since I understand from the reading that Flinstone is not a good choice? Basically, I have information overload and am very confused. I'm needing information of some kind for the amount of a certain vitamin you shouldn't go over in a day for children. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Guest Susanna
HI Marie I understand what you are going through as my 6 year old son's tics started in April. I found this site and was completely overwhelmed with all the information here. My son's pediatric neurologist isn't very receptive to alternative causes or treatments for tics so I found a homeopath who is also a pediatrician to help me in my quest to find alternative ways to help my son. Although she isn't familiar with all the info I am learning about here, she is open and willing to learn with me. Therefore I would suggest that your first step is to find a professional to help you through the testing, etc. Many have found help through naturopaths and DAN doctors. I believe there is a link at the top of the screen which is a place to start in your search. My understanding is that you need to find out what deficiencies your child has and then supplement based on those deficiencies, or fix the cause of the malabsorption of the vitamins/minerals she is currently receiving. There are tests to do this...some require a doctors signature. We still have not determined what deficiencies my son has...we decided to test for food sensitivities first. I did try to supplement with flax seed oil and/or flax seed early on, however did not have much success in getting my son to take those. Also had my son on probiotics for a while but that is hit or miss these days as well. One of the other things I did is eliminate artificial colors, flavors and preservatives and high fructose corn syrup from my son's diet and that seemed to cause some improvement. When I did that I switched his multi-vitamin to one without all that junk in it. I am currently using Country Life Tall Tree children's chewable multi-vitamin & mineral complex dietary supplement. It is free of wheat, gluten, milk, salt, starch, preservatives, artifical flavor or artificial sweetners. I found this vitamin in our local Whole Foods store. Until you find what specific supplementation your child needs I would think any all-natural children's multi-vitamin would be a good place to start. Good luck.
