dd8 has diarrhea now from the augmentin she's on for her bronchitis. Should an increase in probiotics take care of it? Can you use imodium to help? She's scared to go to school tomorrow since it's coming on rather fast. I got her a double dose of probiotics today and will continue that.

On a side note, after 24 hours on the augmentin, although she is still sick and having trouble breathing at times, I am seeing a different girl. She is funny, light, talkative without whining, pleasant (mostly), reasonable (mostly, she is 8 after all  ). I have seen some glimpses into upset and facial grimacing but it has been fleeting. She is still on the 500mg of zithromax that she needs to maintain. I am wondering if the augmentin will help kill whatever bacteria is hidden or lingering and help us further. I am grateful today no matter how long it lasts.

Augmentin gives my child diarrhea that we just can't get rid of until we are done with it, then it resolves rather quickly. We were on both zith and augmentin for a couple weeks in December- after coming off 10 days of rifampin/augmentin. I was very glad to get back to the only zith...and get rid of the tummy issues.

Susan --

We had some diarrhea early on with DS's Augmentin use, but with extra probiotics and some attention to including some BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) items in his regular diet, we appear to have conquered it. Like you, we saw such behavioral and emotional gains with the Augmentin, stopping it because of his tummy wasn't something we wanted to do. We do probiotics in the morning, midday, dinner and bedtime, he eats at least a cup of yogurt daily, and he has a half-banana with breakfast everyday, as well. Applesauce is a favorite . . . especially at lunch . . . and there are some good natural, no-added-sugar brands available, plus he likes using the food processor to make our own; sometimes we add berries to it for a little change-up.

I gave her rice and a banana for dinner (luckily that actually sounded good to her!) and will send apple sauce and yogurt in her lunch tomorrow. So far tonight no more diarrhea. Luckily she's being patient with all my pill pushing I'm doing!

We've had no issues on Augmentin XR (are you doing XR?) as long as we keep up with the probiotics. We do the first horse-pill w/breakfast, then probiotics about 3 hrs later, other supplements with lunch, then another dose of probiotics mid afternoon, second horse-pill of abxs with dinner, and then another probiotic before bed... he's used to it by now, thank God he's never faught the pill-taking!
