dut Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Hi - a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing...... I was doing a bit of googling on kawasaki's 'cos my niece had this and our ds2 had 5 days of fever with no real explanation during his 1st year and I came across this image http://www.healthcentral.com/common/images...931_10878_5.jpg my dd6 has frequently had this going on with a number of her fingers and I never really thought much about it.. surely this can't only be related to kawasaki's. I do get pomphylox as does her brother (I think due to a form of common eczema called dishydrotic eczema) and I suppose I'd always thought it may be due to this... any thoughts welcome.. thanks
momto2pandas Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I will be very curious to hear if anyone has insight on this, too. My ds3 has had this problem for years, and I never thought much of it. He's the one who also has the bright red lips (and often spontaneously bleeding) and cheeks, and the labs that match SF Mom's Kawasaki's kid. We have always joked in our family that he must be some sort of genetic kick-back with his rosy cheeks and lips, since most of us are rather olive. Now I'm wondering if it's no joke at all. sf_mom Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 What can I say.... the peeling hands and feet is a very strong indication of Kawasaki's especially around the fingers and toes. With my son's friend, the skin was coming off in sheets on the bottom of his feet and palm of hand which is a symptom of RF and Scarlet Fever too. Just so you know, these symptoms do not all happen at once and there is often a delay so the associations are not made or missed. My friend's son's symptoms appeared weeks apart but some lasted for months. Oct. 2007 High fever, sore throat, strawberry tongue, white spots on throat, then a week later peeling hands and feet, rash in groin area, then 2 to 3 weeks later swollen neck gland 'one side' the size of a golf ball (this is the timeframe of playdate), positive culture 4 days later...... swollen gland did not resolve until 8 to 10 months later when they finally pulled his adenoids. They kept trying to resolve with antibiotics but every time they stopped the strep would reappear. The main difference between RF and Kawasaki's is the way in which it attacks the heart (friend's son has Tricuspid Regurgitation and our son had Aneurysms) with RF you would have positive cultures for strep and elevated Anti-DNAse-b, RF you would have joint pain/inflammation and Kawasaki's joint pain with restlessness. Our younger son never had the peeling fingers and toes but he was hospitalized within 48 hours of high fever. I wish you could see the Christmas photos from when our son had the 'red lips', 'red eyes'...... its currently packed away in storage. He still has slightly red eyes in corners and the sandpapery rash on lower part of his cheeks that is often red. Just rub your hand along it gently to see if feels like sandpaper. Hope that helps.
