reactive
Hi, I have just been gathering "strep" history information from family this morning. We noticed that a high percentage of our family have had recurrent throat/strep issues. Also, lots of our clan had their tonsils removed as children. Dh has suffered with bouts of glandular fever during his life, and I suffered with recurring sore throat as a child and often get a mild sore throat when dd has strep. Do any other parents have a strong history of Strep issues/tonsil connected infections. Thanks Jules My dh had his tonsils out at age 8 after recurrent tonsillitis. I had recurrent tonsillitis as a kid and even in high school and college. We are both in our early 40's now...when we were kids they never did strep tests on us, treated us clinically with antibioitics. My dh side of family: all his sibs (5) had tonsils out too. My two sibs did not...our ped did not believe in it...my mom tried to get him to OK taking mine out but I never got them out. After ds9 PANDAS occured five years ago, I had strep three years in a row from he and my other ds5. One year, my mom was + first, then me, then we took both our ds to the ped and they were + with no symptoms. Three years ago my ds had tonsils out after very recurrent strep and I do think it improved the PANDAS. But he still gets strep sometimes. Two years ago I had a fever with no sore throat for 5 days, on day five I got a rash, looked like scarlet fever...did not go to the doc...the following week ds9 PANDAS +strep throat so I got ASO done on me and was + so I probably had scarlet fever. My mom also thinks I had rheumatic fever in college, but I went to the college clinic when acute, think it was missed and was feeling better by the time I saw reg. doc so they could not do anything. My mom read Dr. K's website, and she called me and told me she thinks I have the adult onset PANDAS he describes.
DawnMCH
Hi, I'm ColleenRN's sister. I had strep a TON when I was a child. I don't think I had PANDAS, although I did have some unusual anxieties (not touching certain foods, scared of tornados in Virginia where there aren't any!). I continue to get strep as an adult, in fact I was really really sick with it the day I went into labor with my third child (the only one so far who isn't showing PANDAS symptoms but we think is sometimes a carrier as she had asymptomatic strep that caused exacerbation of symptoms in my 2 PANDAS kids) and was on IV antibiotics during delivery and had to wear a mask. My husband and his brother both had their tonsils removed as children. He did suffer from night terrors as a child, not sure if it was PANDAS-related or not. Twice my son, before we new he had PANDAS, had asymptomatic strep that we didn't notice until he got the scarlet fever rash. Looking back at his records, both times were times I had talked to the doctor about the possibility of finally trying ADHD medication b/c he was driving me crazy, but then once he got diagnosed with scarlet fever and took antibiotics, he went back to his "normal". My 9 year old who had a classic OCD onset after a dental cleaning, has only tested positive for strep once, which was 5 months prior to her OCD stuff. I suspect she's had it other times, but that it was missed b/c we went to Urgicare type places and they don't always grow it out for as long as I ask. Her doctor standardly does 72 hours, but they're not open on the weekends or evenings which is, inevitably, when they get the sickest! -Dawn
momto2pandas
I was actually born with tonsils, but over time doctors started talking about how small and then how tiny they were, and the last time I had an exam the doctor asked, "So when did you get your tonsils removed?" I hadn't! Do you know if that is happening more (being born with no tonsils) as a sign of evolution? Example, I have no wisdom teeth...none. That is slowly happening to people because of evolution and the body realizing there is no need for the. I like it because I can tell my husband I am more evolved than him:) My tonsils are missing but I never had them removed! (Stolen in the night?) Apparently that can be a sign of immune deficiency. Yes, to recurrent sore throats, though. With fevers. Hi, I have just been gathering "strep" history information from family this morning.
