I'm trying to get information about strep in the gut, how its found, how its treated, what the effect it has on PANDAS. We are on our 2nd HUGE exaberation since September. And my kid is the one that gets violent with PANDAS so its physically demanding on me as well as the emotional stuff we all go through.

My son is 13 next week. I'm almost positive he's the one I tested positive for strep B when I was pregnant with him and the articles on line say it can be transmitted to the baby. It also suggest that strep B is treated with IV antibiotics.

Just trying a different approach.

Anyone with info PLEASE email me on here because we gotta do something fast!

Hi there,

My son has strep in the gut. It was found through a stool sample (a complete GI panel, I think that's what the test is called).

They were treating him with Amoxicillin, then switched to Cefuroxime plus Vancomicin (it's supposed to clear the intestinal track, if I understand correctly)

He is also on a ton of probiotics. This protocol plus removing tonsils and adenoids made a huge difference in his overall health (before he was tired all the time, had tummy aches, bowel problems, etc), but I did not see that it was helping much with the neurological symptoms (he is more the quiet, OCD type). Then we saw Dr. Latimer and she switched him to Augmentin 875 2xday, plus a 4-week steroid burst w/taper, which put him back to his old happy self. He relapsed due to exposure to strep, and now is on Augmentin XR 2xday. He is doing better overall, still reacts to strep, but not nearly as bad as before. So, I don't know for sure if the strep is gone from his gut, but he is better. We still have a long way to go but things are manageable.

If you have any other questions, let me know. If you want to call me PM me and I'll send you my number.

My daughter complains quite often of stomach pains.. Her tonsils have been removed last year, and were a mess. Her throat cultures have been coming back neg for strep recently, but she has been episodic since Jan. Are stomach pains any indication?

I think stomach pains, irregular bowel activity, throwing up, nausea, etc can all be indications. Also, my son was very fatigued.

I would try to get her titers done and see if they can do a stool analysis. For some reason pediatricians don't think the stool analysis is necessary unless they have diahrrea, but if she has been having stomach/bowel troubles for some time, I would insist on it. Is she on abxs at the moment?

Thanks for your responses.. Yes, she is on Augmentin, 600mg twice daily, but only for about two weeks - she has been on this once before in Sept. and, though she had some loose stools, her reaction (if that is what this is) was not near as bad. Also, she had 10 days of Azithro in Jan. for micoplasmic pneumonia - she was very high positive even after first round. Today and yesterday she has a fever of 101, along with stomach pain and diarrhea. She was not tested for strep today, since ped. said she will put her on Azithro one more time. Apparently, the pneumonia isn't quite gone??

She is often fatigued as well, and almost ALWAYS has dark circles under eyes, along with a pale countenance. During her exacerbations, she rages as well, and is becoming increasingly violent with each episode - kicking, punching, biting, screaming about how she hates God, throwing things, etc. Surprisingly, today and yesterday... she was PERFECTLY behaved. Wonder if all these kids are better during fevers.... or if the Augmentin may be working?? I fear the storm may come days or weeks from now. Last bloodwork done (Feb 5) showed ANA titers at 640.

I will DEFINITELY look more into finding strep in these more elusive places.

Thanks - good luck to everyone!!!

have you had her tested for allergies? dark circles under the eyes are often called "allergy shiners" are a pretty big indication of an allergic reaction to something.

I just had a sinus xray done - came back ok. Waiting on an immunology appt - hoping that covers allergies -

Thx
