Lotafaith Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 I was wondering what does the majority of you use in the area of fish oils, I have read about Omega Brite a couple of times on this forum, is that a good one to order and use? Thank you, Lotafaith
Suzan Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 We have used Nordic Naturals, I think it is great, OK tasting and no fishy burps, comes in several different ways (liquid, pills and chewables). My dd7 likes Coromega (orange flavor pudding type thing). dd8 takes Chia Seed. I can hide that very well as she is very sensitive to any omega I try. I have not heard of Omega Brite. I'll check that out too. Susan
earnestfamily7 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 we just started the Omegas here... we have the Nordic Naturals 3-6-9... lemon flavor gel capsule chewable.... even my 5 yr old takes it w/ no problem.... he is so cute about his new supps He starts jumping up & down saying its time for the new lemon vitamin (and he is a very picy/taste sensitive boy) My DD7 and DS 9 also take them w/o complaint
Lotafaith Posted February 13, 2010 Author Report Posted February 13, 2010 HI, This is where I was reading about the omegas and the ratios and the importance of it, I am still very much learning about all of this stuff and trying to order the right supplements. So many choices about different brands http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...aBrite&st=0 (My best pieces of hard-won experience after decades of figuring this) Lotafaith
dut Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 We've been doing the omegabrite for a month or so.. both my dd6 and ds2 will have the tutti frutti flavour oil. I'm taking the gell caps as is my dh. So far nothing to report but it's ease of use for the kid. We'll keep on taking on the back of what momto2 has said...
momto2pandas Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 We use Omegabrites or other 7:1 EPA:DHA, as you know. Not only the ratio, but the dose is important. The bottle says 1/4 tsp for a child my son's age (6, 45 pounds), but he doesn't do well on that amount - he needs half a tsp to really get the symptoms down. My 3 yo takes 1/4 tsp. The people at Omegabrite told me that the bottle labeled dose is "very conservative," and I'm guessing this may be true for other brands as well. I highly recommend really reading the research on the omega-3's, as the offerings on the market vary a lot both in ratios and in dosage, and the differences are really important. Some people may do better on high DHA, my family clearly does best on high EPA. The doses needed in the studies varied a lot, as well. Yesterday, I found out that the kids have Strep again. I was actually taking ds3 into the doctor because he sounded nasally like he had another sinus infection, and since ds6 had complained about "a little bit of mad feeling" (how he describes irritability/anxiety) when he came home from school, I had the ped check him out too just because we were there. Sure enough, Strep. Shocked me because I had volunteered at the school that day and had seen no evidence whatsoever of PANDAS or any kind of anxiety/irritability, and after school, I saw only one very brief episode of snapping at his brother. He was fine and focussed through 2 hours of karate and everything. I am amazed that he could deal with Strep that well after what we saw when he was first diagnosed, and I have to credit the fish oil and probably the rest of our regime - though who knows. Needless to say he is on Augmentin as of today to try to get rid of it. I was wondering what does the majority of you use in the area of fish oils, I have read about Omega Brite a couple of times on this forum, is that a good one to order and use? Thank you, Lotafaith
JMTho Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 We use Nordic Naturals EPAxtra 4:1 EPA:DHA (no omega 6= proinflammatory) Interesting article on omega-3 oils and inflammation: http://www.hindawi.com/journals/cpn/2009/725310.html
JMTho Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Oops... I meant to copy this link, too -another omega-3 article: http://www.thorne.com/altmedrev/.fulltext/8/4/410.pdf

familyof4 Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Thanks for the info on Omega 6's. I just found MorEPA Smart Fats at Whole Foods and was thrilled that it had the 7-1 EPA / DHA Ratio - 580mg EPA to 80mg DHA. However it does conain 45mg of Omega 6 so I'll probably start looking for something else instead.
momto2pandas Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 We didn't do much experimenting because my doctor, who had been involved in the research in omega's at Harvard, told me right off the bat that I needed at least a 7:1 ratio, and told me what dose to take. When I started giving it to my sons, I talked to the omegabrite people about dosing and read through the research studies, and that's how I arrived at the doses for them. The only experimenting we have done has been inadvertent. After 9 years with next to no symptoms, I figured that I was just "healed" and slacked off and stopped taking the 7:1 ratio/right dose for a few months - went with the cheaper and more conveniently acquired Trader Joe's or Costco bottles with 3:2 ratios. Then I got a nasty sinus infection last fall and had an episode that needed to be halted with steroids. My ds6 started having problems again around Dec-Jan surrounding some dental issues and extractions following on the heels of a sinus infection, and it was at the end of that period that dh, who had come to dispense the morning supps, told me that he had noticed a couple of months before that ds had been taking "too much" omegabrite and had reduced him to the bottle-labeled dose of 1/4 teaspoon. Once I informed him that ds was actually supposed to be taking the double-dose -- that it hadn't been an error in my instructions -- we increased it again, and ds's symptoms minimized again within less than a week. The boys actually really like the flavor of the Omegabrite liquid and have never complained about burp-back or anything like that. Ds6 swallows capsules now and that's cheaper, easier with travel, and there are more options, so he's been taking the Nature's Way stuff instead with good results. I've taken both Omegabrite and Nature's Way capsules and have not had any problems with fish-burp either. We use Omegabrites or other 7:1 EPA:DHA, as you know. Lotafaith Posted February 13, 2010 Author Report Posted February 13, 2010 mom I know this may sound stupid but please explain to me the ratios and how they work, how do they come up with number like 7 to 1?
