Hi,

I am new. My son is autisic and has been dealing with chronic sore throats and strep since 06. I am trying to locate a doctor in Texas. I have researched the files and found 1 doctor in Texas from another poster. It is Dr. Mark Mazade, pediatric infectious disease specialist. I was wondering if anyone could please post of any other doctors in texas that I could contact. I am very new to all of this.

I took him to the ENT Thursday, and the doc. says his tonsils need to come out. Due to his chronic strep and sore throats he has ocd, and developed a habit of not swallowing his spit. For the last 4 years he spits in a cup, toilet, or trash can. He can swallow, and has no probelms eating or drinking. He just does not like to swallow. Between autism, ocd, and strep I really need some help please.

Thanks so much,

N&L

Welcome.

You say he has chronic strep. To your knowledge does he have strep now? Have you discussed possible PANDAS with your ped or DAN! (if you have one)? If you have a DAN! doctor, they are usually familiar with PANDAS and it will give you somewhere to start while you call and make an appt with maybe one of the TX doctors listed. There's no reason you can't try to have more than one doctor on board.

I wonder if he doesn't like to swallow because he hesitates and thinks about t. If you do that then swallow, it almost feels like you might choke or you can't breath. When you eat, it's just part of the process. I don't know if that's a possiblre reason. Just thinking out loud.

N&L--Did you see this thread? It is where parents post doctors that have been helpful--there may be additional doctors in nearby states listed here that may be of use to you.

You may also wish to contact Diana at the www.pandasnetwork.org website,

and Beth Maloney at the Saving Sammy website to ask as they both have doctor lists.

All the best to you--

Hi Vickie,

Even though he did not test postive last week on a strep culture, I really think he has it. He wakes up saying his throat hurts, all day says ill and throat hurts, and says get rid of spit, clean mouth. So I know when he says this he has it. It is just frustrating knowing something is wrong with your child and you go in and get the test and it comes back negative.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the spit and then the difference it feels when you eat. I think the same thing. Hopefully, I will get in contact with a doctor knowledgeable about PANDAS. thanks for your help.

i live in fort worth and have found NO doctors that will even look at PANDAS and my daughter is being treated by doctor out of state and tics are gone after years of searching for answers. let me know. i am constantly calling cook childrens neuro to see if they have changed their mind if PANDAS really does exist. NO new news.

When I took my son to the ENT, the ENT suggested t and a surgery. I them asked if he would put my son on antibiotics util the surgery date to try to prevent strep until then. He agreed. But, I had to ask. He wouldn't have offered. It's something to try.

Also, remember that strep occurs in more places than the throat. It can be in the sinuses, gut, anal area, and even some ear infection derive from strep.

I just say thank God we have boys and I don't have to worry about vaginal strep with him!

Also, if his throat still hurts, you coud take him back for another strep test. Is he congested too? Could his throat be hurting from nasal drainage or a sinus infection?

Do you have a DAN! dr on your team already?

Dr. Kendall Stewart in Austin treats children with Autism as well as Pandas. My dd has seen him for Sensory Integration Disorder issues which he treated with antivirals but we could never get rid of the Tics. I asked him about PANDAS two years ago when she was seeing him and he had never heard of it. So I pushed PANDAS to the back burner. When I recently started researching PANDAS again I realized why. She has bacterial issues as well. We currently have an appt to see him for the PANDAS issues. He just started treating this disorder within the past 12 months so I am not sure of his exact protocol, but at least he recognizes it and has researched it. He is with Neurosensory Center of Austin.
