sww817 Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 For those children that get dilated pupils during an exacerbation, how long do they stay dilated? Is it for days during the episodes? Or just when they are in a rage? If just during rage / symptoms how quickly do they seem normal?
momto2pandas Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 For my kids, they are usually dilated for 2-3 of days. We can generally get exacerbations under control within 2-3 days. I can see easily when an exacerbation is starting from the pupils, and when I see the irises again, I heave a huge sigh of relief. When ds6 got out of the dentist chair after his extraction/nerve work recently and his pupils were suddenly gigantic, I felt like I was going to throw up right then and there with dread. Sure enough, it was a very tough week. Funny thing is, my Mom always said that I had the pupils issue when I got sick and "went into a trance" (as she put it) when I was a kid - she knew when it was coming by this sign. But as an adult, even when I had that one real "PANDAS" episode a couple of months ago, my pupils looked totally normal. Granted it was nothing like the severity I had when younger but I still thought it was strange that my eyes didn't seem to react at all. dut Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Hello Our dd6 had a ramp in PANDAS symptoms that was turned around by steroids. Over the last couple of weeks she has had super minor issues at bed. Yesterday she had stomach ache (she had a very loose tooth that came out last night. I'm sure that tooth loss for her releases stuff into her bloodstream) we also seem to get stomach aches or nausea at times of symptom flares...... sorry long intro but.... she seems to get dilated pupils when she gets the stomach ache.. is that 'cos both come at exacerbation or due to the pain? She won't be dilated all day. It seems more correlated to the times she is in pain although she assures me the pain isn't that bad but I'm assuming the dilation is due to pain. Am I wrong? Any ideas are welcome... Thanks.

Ok, I have to say that my dd's pupils since her main exacerbation are always dilated bigger than the average. Even after 13 months post IVIg and supposed remission she still has very large pupils. I remember back during her big exacerbation we used to see dramatic changes in her pupils, right before our own eyes. I don't remember now exactly what changed about them but I remember that it made me drop to my knees in the middle of a grocery store and grab her by the shoulders out of fear.
