I'm just another parent and no medical professional, but that level of amoxicillin seems potentially low. How long has he been taking it? Have you seen any improvement at all, or "shifting" of the symptoms, even? It seems to vary from kid to kid, history to history and even location to location. But overall I haven't seen much success with amoxicillin for PANDAS. Buster and some others refer to the fact that amoxicillin is not thought to be capable of addressing "intracellular" strep infections, so it doesn't work in many cases, especially those that have been ongoing for some time. It seems the common abx noted here are Augmentin and Azithromicin, as well as some Keflex. My son is 12, 5'2", about 125 pounds, and is on 2,000 mg. Augmentin XR (1,000 mg. doses, twice daily), just as a point of comparison.
Megs_Mom Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 Some of the "myacin" abx are also shown to be anti-inflamatory in studies of other auto-immune disease - which our immunologist thinks is really helping our daughter. She is on Azith.

He has been on it since Nov 11th (he had his tonsils removed that day ) He was diagnosed with unconfirmed PANDAS in 2006... took about a year for most symptoms to go away... lots of trial and error and trying to get docs to come on board.... had some problems in spring of 08.... then nothing for about 1 year tat did not go away with antibiotic from prediatrican.... after tonsilectomy things went nuts!.... he he has been on that low does since and I am trying to convince drs that it is an exasperation! not OCD not tics .... I have seen some improvement on it but not near complete... he does have time periods that are better than others and just when I think he getting better I am reminded that he is not I will talk to the dr on Thursday about switching meds... is Keflex an anitbiotic? I am not familiar with that one.... and what is intracellular? does that show in bloodwork ups?
thereishope Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 You're not the only one who has seen problems arrise after t and a surgery. So, is that a prophylactic dose? Have taken him for a strep test? My son had a + strep test about a month after his t and a surgery. If you haven't taken him in for a strep test yet, do it.

Yes, Keflex is an antibiotic; my understanding is that it is commonly prescribed for infections like sinus and UTI. Again, a little out of my league/over my head, but there are other threads on the topic here in the forum. But intracellular is when the strep gets inside a cell and sort of "hangs out." Then, when the cell expires, the strep is released and becomes active again. I don't know if it shows up in any actual blood test. Maybe elevated ASO titers on a consistent basis would be indicative of intracellular strep since titers reflect recent exposure?
Kayanne Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 another good antibiotic is Clindamycin, but DO NOT get the liiquid....your child will never take it. Instead ask for caspsules, and open them and add to something good. We added it to chocolate pudding.
