peglem Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 I don't know how to tell for sure...w/ my daughter, when the vag yeast shows up, I know for sure- but you don't have that "luxury" w/ a boy. She has less yeast trouble with zith than w/ augmentin. Maybe because zith is just 1x/day and I can spend the rest of the day treating yeast. Augmentin always results in hard to battle yeast here. My experience has been that the rageys come from strep and the hyperhyper maniac giggling is from yeast. But I don't know that it presents the same in others.

peglem Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 When she was on augmentin, I was giving a probiotic capsule about once an hour + 5 or 6 yogurts a day. We still needed diflucan to finally get rid of the yeast though. I've never heard of too much probiotics....
dut Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 can't help with what the problem is.. but if it is yeast you should give sacchoromyces boulardii as well as probiotics... it's a good yeast that fights the bad. Our dd is on proph abx and it really helps her. we use a product called florastor... expensive but it works and the abx don't affect it as it's a yeast. give it in addition to the usual probiotics. We also use a probiotic called Pharmax HLC, our pharmacist , who I really rate, reckons it is the only one he would recommend. It is human strain probiotics not animal strain and thus, supposedly, better as it survives the journey to the lower gut better. Again, it's expensive but that combined with the florastor really seems to do the trick for us....
dut Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 I said sachh. b. fights the bad yeast, I should have said it competes with it ....
smartyjones Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 most seem to think could be yeast and have given suggestions - not to argue with that - just to tell our experience - when we first discovered pandas and active strep culture - the ped put him on 5 days of azith. he was horrible - all pandas behaviors, some of which had gone, returned with a vengenance - extremely clingy, agitated, anxious, obnoxious. a few days after off the abx, he was much better. the next month, he went on 30 days of keflex - returned 100% to prepandas in about 3 days. i definitely think abx can cause different, difficult reactions in certain people.

dut Posted December 27, 2009 Report Posted December 27, 2009 We use the florastor to compete with the bad yeast. the pharmax (hopefully) replenishes the good bacteria but the sacchoromyces boulardii actually competes (I guess for food/space etc) with the bad yeast and isn't affected by the abx. Our pharmacist guy said if he had to take just one of the two, he'd take the florastor (s. boulardii). You can get other brands of it but I go with the one he sells and recommends and so far we seem to be doing ok. We take about .5 to 1 tsp of probiotics and 1 capsule of florastor per day, sometimes more sometimes less if we forget. Our dd is only on 600mg azith per week.
