crazy Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 My son was been diagnosed with chronic motor tics about a year ago by a neurologist. He had tics prior this was an official diagnosis. He is Topamax which does somewhat help the tics. He has been about 98% tic free since August. We went to quick care last night because on a white pearl like thing on his tonsil. He did a rapid strep test which is negative. He said the spot was a tonsil stone and plucked it right out. My son has no cold symptons or tics at this time. I got called today that the 24 hour test was postive. I was shocked. Does that mean he has Pandas? Is he a strep carrier? I do not see increase in tics, his behavior is typical (a bit moody). He has no other issues. What should I do? Should he just take the antiboitic and not pursue this anymore? He is so tired of Doctors. We go to the Neurologist Sat. for a follow and perscription refill. Please give me some input.
thereishope Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Does he continue to be 98% tic free? Do you notice any other behavior changes? Start the antibiotics and be watchful to see if anything (tics, behaviors, odd behaviors) surface or worsen over the next few days. I would also suggest taking him for a follow up strep test at least 14 days after finishing his antibiotic to ensure the strep infection is gone. Often with PANDAS kids who do not get classic strep symptoms (like my son), their behvaior changes are what prompts us to take them to the doctor for the strep test in the first place. I guess you can say their behavior change is their symptom of strep. Also, just because he does not get classic strep symptoms does not make him a carrier.
