TracyRee Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Please bear with me, I'm at a low point. DS (suspected PANDAS) had strep that started 3 weeks ago. Fevers, sore throat with white patches. Was on cefadroxil for 5 days but ended up with walkign pnemonia. At that point he was given rocefrin (abx injection) and five days of azythro. I asked for a longer duration of azyrtho but was told he didn't need it because he had that rocefrin. I was planning on insisting on another throat culture after he'd been off abx for 2 weeks, but here we are at 7 days out and DS still has white patches in his throat. (he was seen by doc 4 days ago and doc said he looked fine, but I see them. It's not like one or two little white spots, it's quite a bit. So, what now? Is Monday too soon for a reculture? (I was actually thinking abotu taking him to one of those minute clinics for a rapid test tomorrow) I NEED to find a new doctor...will post a seperate thread...

Will the minute clinics culture if the rapid is neg? If so, I'd take him there. When we 1st discovered strep in my child, she was treated with Keflex for 14 days. @ 5 days after that the behaviors came back and i took her back for another swab- I heard the doc. and nurse talking outside the exam room: N: I think it looks positive. D: That's impossible, she's just had 14 days of Keflex! N: Well it looks positive to me. D: Send it in for a culture. The doc did give us abx that day, and the culture did come back positive. Sometimes doctors are so confident in the treatment, they will not recheck.
sww817 Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 I THINK it might be too soon off the abx for a rapid to show positive. You will need a culture. Someone might chime in if I am wrong?? But you might just want to make sure they can do more than a rapid before you go.
TracyRee Posted December 5, 2009 Author Report Posted December 5, 2009 Thank you both. So there shouldn't be white patces at this poitn? They don't need time to "heal", just go away if the strep is gone? I can get him in for a culture on Monday, can it wait that long?
