lukes_mom Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 I'm new here, so please bare with me. My son has been struggling with tics and ADHD for 3 years. After years of supplements, Brain Balance program, doctor after doctor, homeopath dr., etc, I still feel like we're where we started. We're just at the beginning stages of considering PANDAS. How would I know if yeast were playing a part in all of this? Thank you
Rachel_S Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Hi - You wouldn't know unless you have your child tested. Given the ADHD, I can't help but think of a book I read by Dr. Mark Hyman called the UltraMind Solution that discusses how we see neurological and psychological disorder in our kids as a result of physical imbalance. He is a functional medicine doctor. Reading his book prompted me to seek out a functional medicine doctor (an MD, b/c I too took my daughter to a homeopath, but the unlicensed nature of it made me nervous) in my area who did a plethora of tests (including yeast) on my daughter. http://www.functionalmedicine.org/about/whatis.asp On this website you can find doctors by zip code. I'm new to all this myself so can't be more definitive, but it may be worth looking into as it was this doctor who uncovered food intolerance to gluten and dairy that an allergist at Boston Children's never uncovered. I think your hunch that something else is going on in your child may be right on.
lukes_mom Posted December 2, 2009 Author Report Posted December 2, 2009 Thanks for your response. My son is GF/DF, which hasn't made a huge difference as far as behavior or tics. We found the dairy and peanut by IGg testing and the gluten by IGa stool analysis. We just did some IGe and a SIP (silent inflammitory panel), which we haven't gotten the results from yet. The alternative dr. ordered these. I feel desperate to figure it out and feel like I'm going in so many directions I'm having trouble keeping it straight. I had checked this book out once from our library but didn't read the whole book. I will check it out again. I've read all the Jenny McCarthy books, Saving Sammy, several nutritional healing type books, and I'm just dizzy! Our ped. just referred us to a ped. psychiatrist who has treated kids with PANDAS. So we'll see how that goes. Do you know how they test a child for yeast? What issues are you dealing with for your child? Hi - You wouldn't know unless you have your child tested. How would I know if yeast were playing a part in all of this? Thank you Yeast definitely causes ADHD behavior. My son also gets overly silly, talks CONSTANTLY, and has difficulty staying on task, when he has yeast. You can test for yeast with both urine and stool tests. A mainstream doc won't do this, but a Naturopath or DAN doctor will. Treating the yeast can make a HUGE difference!! Paula
lukes_mom Posted December 2, 2009 Author Report Posted December 2, 2009 Are there any tell-tale signs that I should look for or is yeast something that should be tested anyway? Also, my son had an ASO titer of 400. I've been e-mailing back and forth with Beth Maloney (Saving Sammy) and she says, based upon this, now I know what I'm dealing with. But my son has had several bouts of strep throat. I'm just not sure that this titer is enough to base a PANDAS diagnosis on. What do you think or what is your experience?
