thereishope Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 My son was one of those kids. He ate chicken nuggets that same day! His recovery was amazingly easy. The ENT said to go ahead and let your children what they want. Don't baby the tonsils. The longer they don't eat "regular food", the thicker the scabs will be and hurt more. He said th worst patients for recovery are teen girls. They worry so much that they will hurt, they don't eat. Then thick scabs form, etc... WOW!!! You all are wonderful!! Thank you sooo much this really helps me, if anything I feel better. I'm wondering if during the recovery he would be in so much pain he would not make his vocals? He only has vocals and we notice that he does not tic when he is not feeling well. I really hope I have good news to share with you all. He sees the ENT Thurs. so if we can get the ABX for 10 days this will get him through Thanksgiving, I would hate to have this done to a 16yo who at this age loves to eat. If you all could for even just for a moment remember him in your prayers. Thanks again you all have been great!! CP Our ENT said he has seen kids who are eating cheeseburgers the day after the surgery, maybe he'll be one of those lucky ones!
thereishope Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 It's funny you ask about PITANDS. Just a few days ago I was trying to educate myself on it and I got confused. I think it said that PITANDS is when it is not caused by strep? Then it went on to say that subsequent occurraces may not necessarily follow an infection. Hmm....I think we need to start a new topic! Well, I have not searched for it yet on here to read any old ones. perhaps I should do that first. Thank you Debbie1, I think this is why I'm willing to try this because the Dr. thought it won't hurt him. Now I was on the ENT's web page and I was so excited because he has pages of the PANDAS/PITANDS info. So I fell like I will be talking with a Dr. I don't have to educate. Most of you all may not know my son's story, but he exploded with screaming 6 weeks after having 2 shot at 12yo. I'm confused about the PITANDS and where it says "possable recent exposure to childhood vaccination." Does this mean the strep preceded the vaccines and then after the vaccines all h### broke. So the PANDAS/PITANDS is really the same thing? Anyone know what I mean and could explain? I hope you are right, mati's mom, he would love to eat a few cheesburgers. CP
CSP Posted November 18, 2009 Author Report Posted November 18, 2009 Ok, Vickie, I'll wait for you. Hi, Faith, from the other side. Waving? I would expect you to be blowing me kisses. CP
thereishope Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Well, I tried to look up PITANDS in this forum and this conversation is what pops up. For some reason, if the keyword you type has beenused recently only that recent thread pops up, not all of them from the past. Maybe there's a different spot to search. Or maybe it's easier just to strart a new thread:) I'm thinking it's easier to start a new thread.

DebC Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Our PANDAS child still has her tonsils. However, our 5 year old, non PANDAS son had his tonsils removed last November a week and a half before Thanksgiving. The biggest piece of advice I can give is to give pain meds around the clock. We set the alarm to ring every time he was due a dose and woke him to give him the medication. That way, we stayed ahead of the pain. Also, around day 5 to 7, you see a dramatic improvement in pain level but that is typically short lived as the scabs start to come off a day or two later. Then the pain is as bad or worse than at the beginning. At day 10, it was as if someone had flipped a switch around noon. Suddenly , the pain was just gone. Our son has been much healthier since. We also asked if our son could be hospitalized over night to keep him hydrated with IV fluids, and since he had some breathing issues it was determined a stay would be a good idea.
CSP Posted November 18, 2009 Author Report Posted November 18, 2009 I really can't thank you all enough. I feel I'm well prepared and have you all to thank. I just have to tell you all that my son just turned 16 in OCT. and he wanted to join the volunteer fire dept. in our town. He sent in an application and was approved by the board last week. He came home from school and put the VFF uniform on and I just about broke into tears. He looked so handsome and I can only tell you all, he was so bad with the screaming when he was 12yo I would have never thought he would be doing this. Keep the faith all your prayers will be answered for your child. Thanks again for all the help, CP
thereishope Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 That's great to hear! I've already have moments when I look at my son and I am amazed by how much he overcame in such a short life (he's 6). Our kids are such strong people. So many can learn from them. I really can't thank you all enough. I feel I'm well prepared and have you all to thank. CSP Posted November 20, 2009 Author Report Posted November 20, 2009 Ok, ENT said son's tonsils were large and he would take them out. He knew a lot about PANDAS and when my son objected to the T&A he was real good at calming him down and told him it would be worth it if he had any strep in the tonsils. My son did just have strep, but we have been told he has TS so he thinks we are putting him through something that he does not need. Dr agreed to only 5 days of zith. and he is do for the T&A Tues. I wanted to wait until after Thanksgiving, but ds said that he did not want to miss a fire fighter training class in Dec. He does not want to be out of school a week so since Tues. is their last day before Thankgiving he really is only missing maybe 2 days of school. Dr. said he will do abx during and after so I'm good with that. Please, please keep him in your prayers. Son thinks he won't wake up. If you all think of anything else I need to know chime in. CP
peglem Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 I will keep your son in my prayers. I feel bad that he's so scared.
