Guest jimh
Hello to all. I have been reading several of Ronna's posts concerning taking her son off of Orap and using Bontech supplements. My eleven year old is presently taking orap(4mg.a day) and we have recently started using the Bontech supplements. He has been on Orap for about a year and has done o.k., however, I would like to take him off of the Orap altogether and see how the supplements work alone. Ronna mentioned the difficult time her son had getting off of the Orap. Can you give me any idea of what to expect? We have an appointment with his neurologist in a month to discuss, but was hoping for any information about him getting off of the Orap. Thanks, Jim
Guest Guest
Hi Jim, My son was on Orap for over a year. With the help of a naturopath doctor and our pediatrician we discontinued kurt's Orap. Without a doubt I am sooo glad that Kurt is no longer on it. He is a different kid. There was a time when Kurt really needed it and it gave me the time to find other answers but Kurt is so much better without it. Although the doctors told us that orap is not addictive it was not that easy to stop it. We struggled for a few weeks and my son was on only .25 mg once a day. Your son is on a much higher dose. My advice would be to discontinue it slowly over a few weeks (however, don't take my advice...please confirm this with the doctors). Some kids are prescribed meds to help with the withdrawl...I will try and dig up the old posts on braintalk where we talked about this. I think the Orap affected Kurt's growth (as in he stopped growing while he was on it). Within 3 weeks of stopping the Orap Kurt grew an inch and lost 3 pounds. He has continued to have more growth spurts and has lost a few more pounds since. Within about 4-6 weeks he was looking really good and healthy. Kurt lacked motivation while on the Orap and he is now alot more lively and I feel like I have my son back. Kurt's appetite is much more normal now as well. Bonnie's supplements are working well for us. However, Kurt does react to the BonTech EPA/DHA formula. For us we decided to stop the meds first and then add the supplements so that I had a baseline to start with however, others may have a better idea than me about discontinuing meds and introducing supplements. As well I should mention that my son has been helped TONS by eliminating dairy, eggs, corn and chocolate and by reducing TV, computers and video games. The only way to see if part of the problem is food senstivities is to do an elimination diet. We were very surprised to find that corn was a problem. Best of luck to you and your son! Guest Guest
Jim Were your son's tics interfering with his day to day life that you started him on Orap? What were his motor and vocal tics and when was he diagnosed with TS? Does TS run in your family? Does he have ADHD/OCD too? Goodluck to you.
