sparky Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 I introduced myself on tics board but someone suggested I ask questions here. My main question I have is that my soon to be 13 yr old d has been having tic like movements (mainly when she is excited or thinking about something, sometimes fo rno reason) since at least 4 months old. Neuor doc said not tics but stereotypes, maybe known as stimming these days. SHe used to have a possible OCD with wanting to do carthweels on the living room floor and said she couldn't stop it, and has an issue of putting toilet paper in her underwear thinking she is leaking urine, but no problem, just says she feels like she is going to. Used to line up her barbie dolls a lot and play school, never has been a neat freak or hand washer. My mil has major OCD isssues. I had strep B at time of her delivery. She has never had strep throat that I recall. Had eating disorder last year with fear of fats and carbs, weight gain..major problems, but better. Has always been anxious child but nothing where she needed meds. Highly intelligent and social. Very neat handwriting ( i read handwriting can be affected) Has has had major food allergies and such all her life. Eczema when younger. SHe will also do faical grimacing when she does her hands and hold breath and stare intenlty at times.

From your description it sounds like your d is experiencing a number of things that are sometimes experienced by kids who have been "diagnosed" with PANDAS. For us it took time and observation to come up with a fairly clear picture. The eating disorder you mention (representing obsessions or compulsions around food issues), is the one that strikes me in your description. The symptoms experienced (at least initially) by most of the PANDAS kids have episodes that come on suddenly and often leave just as suddenly, these episodes may include tics, OCD, anorexia and a host of other side issues...They seem to get worse when children are exposed to illnesses or get sick themselves--Have you seen that pattern? The sudden-onset has been key for many people as far as raising the PANDAS question. For example I can point to the week my d "became anorexic" and started exercising compulsively, this lasted for 3 months and then left. Re: The OCD issues, are these ongoing for your child, did they come on suddenly? Have you seen exacerbations? What have doctors said re: the facial grimacing/hands issue and breath holding? all the best--
sparky Posted August 16, 2009 Author Report Posted August 16, 2009 TMom, I have been searching the internet for her movements and from what I gather, and what neuro said at age 2-3, she has stereotpyed movements. She's had them since infancy, they just never went away. I read they peak at adolescense, she's about to turn 13 and seems to have gotten worse in the past month. My son is on antibiotic for non Group Strep currently, but not sure if this is the reason for increased lately. We have appt with ped next week to discuss what to do next. She seemed to control them at school in 5th grade when a few kids made fun of her. She says she doesn't even know she does it, unless she is looking at her hands. I am not sure about the OCD when it started. SHe used to do cartwheels and hasn't done those in a good while, and this may have been an OCD, as she said she couldn't stop at times and something told her to do them. Since Dr. Murphy is in my state, I am going to ask the ped if they think she should be evaluated by Dr. Murphy. Thanks, Sparky
